Sinead O’Connor’s family break silence with heartbreaking update 1 month after star’s death

The family of Sinéad O’Connor has broken their silence to issue an update to the singer’s fans one month after her passing.

O’Connor, famous for such hits as Nothing Compares 2 U and Am I Not Your Girl? was found dead in her London apartment at the age of 56 on July 26, prompting an outpour of tributes from fans and followers around the world.

The Irish singer received critical acclaim and worldwide success for her music, but she also struggled with mental health issues and was the center of numerous controversies due to her outspoken political and social views.

Shortly after her death, her family said in a statement to The Irish Times: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

Now, over a month on from O’Connor’s passing, her family have decided to speak out again, this time to thank fans of the late star for their support and kind messages.

“The children of Sinéad together with Sinéad’s extended family wish to thank the countless kind people who sympathised and offered condolences on Sinéad’s recent passing,” the statement, given again to The Irish Times, read.

“Their helpful support for the family is much appreciated.”

It continued: “Our thanks to the media personnel in general at home and abroad who celebrated Sinéad in song and story while showing respect for the privacy requested by the family. We ask that this privacy continue to be respected,” the statement continued.

“Finally, we wish to thank Sinéad’s fans and admirers for the wonderful funeral procession they gave her past her old home in Bray and for the national and international outpouring of love and affection for Sinéad from the time of her passing. The prayers and thanks of the extended O’Connor family are with you all.”

As per reports, Sinead suffered from multiple mental health issues during her life, and is survived by children Jake Reynolds, 34, Roisín Waters, 27, and sixteen-year-old Yeshua Bonadio.

Last year, her 17-year-old son, Shane Lunny, died by suicide.

Tragically, Sinead posted a heartbreaking update on Twitter prior to her death, reflecting on the pain caused by Shane’s death.

“Been living as undead night creature since,” she wrote. “He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him.”

British police are said to have discovered O’Connor “unresponsive” at her London home on Wednesday, July 26, and she was promptly pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities revealed in a statement that an autopsy was being conducted, and that it may take “several weeks” for the results to be available, delaying the determination of the official cause of death.

Rest in peace, Sinead O’Connor. We can only imagine the pain and anguish experienced by her family.
