80% of drivers don’t know what sailboat light on dashboard means

Car dashboard lights are designed to keep drivers informed about their vehicle’s health, yet many people have no idea what one – the mysterious boat-like symbol – really means.

This light can pop up unexpectedly, leaving drivers terribly confused – especially the ones who warn that “pirates are approaching” or that a “car is in yacht mode.”

Driving comes with a whole list of things to keep track of – speed limits, fuel levels, and, of course, those mysterious dashboard warning lights, which according to a survey by ATS Euromaster, are ignored by 16% of drivers.

That number however seems very little compared to the 80% of drivers who have no idea what a crucial symbol on their dashboard actually means.

The boat

You probably know the common warning lights – low fuel, tire pressure, and the check engine light. But when a strange symbol that looks like a boat with wavy lines lights up, most people are left scratching their heads.

Recently, a driver posted a picture of their dashboard on X, asking for help identifying the flashing icon.

“What’s this light mean?” she asked in the now viral tweet, that’s hit the eyes of 20.4 million people since it was shared December 29, 2024.

“It’s in sailing mode. It should convert to a boat when you get near water,” offers one netizen while a second says, “You forgot to raise the mast. Are you currently in water?”

A third writes, “It is telling you to hoist the mainsail, you have [high] winds!” And a fourth quips, “Car is in yacht mode…Head to the beach!”

Some joked the light is a warning that “Vikings” or “pirates” were approaching, and to “jump ship and swim” to safety, while other cyber fans took their best guesses: “Triple periscope submarine ahead,” tweets one.

“That’s your reward for driving, when the boat pops up that means time for a cruise on the blue seas. You have to redeem it at the dealership,” writes a second netizen.

“It might point that you parked over oil well so just drill,” a third user shares, while another comments, “The owner’s manual clearly states ‘the key is sinking in a river’”

Though internet users proved they have a great sense of humor, none of the above suggestions were right.

Engine coolant light

It’s not a boat – it’s the engine coolant warning light!

This crucial symbol – a thermometer sitting on wavy lines – indicates an overheating engine and when it comes on, it’s your car’s way of saying, “Hey, I’m getting way too hot!”

The light may also show amber, which means the car coolant level is low, or red, which means it is below the minimum or the car is overheating.

What the light could be saying:

  • Low coolant levels: Your engine needs coolant to stay at the right temperature. Running low can cause it to overheat.
  • Coolant leak: A crack in the radiator or hoses might be letting coolant escape, which leads to trouble.
  • Faulty thermostat: If the thermostat gets stuck, your engine might not get the cooling it needs.
  • Radiator blockages: Dirt, debris, or corrosion can block coolant flow, causing heat buildup.
  • Water pump failure: If your water pump isn’t working properly, coolant won’t circulate, leading to overheating.

Ignoring these issues could leave you facing a hefty repair bill – or even needing a new engine.

What to do

If you suddenly see the engine cooling warning light, don’t ignore it!

Follow these steps to prevent serious damage:

  • Pull over safely: As soon as it’s safe, pull over and turn off the engine to let it cool down. And, if the light is red, driving could seriously damage your engine. Call for help.
  • Check the coolant level: Once the engine has cooled, open the hood and check if the coolant reservoir is low.
  • Look for leaks: If you notice coolant dripping under the car, it might be time to call for roadside assistance.
  • Call a mechanic: If you’re unsure about what to do, it’s best to seek the help of a mechanic.

Car dashboard lights may seem confusing, but understanding them can save you time, money, and stress. The engine cooling warning light is one that no driver should ignore. Knowing what it means and how to react can help you avoid costly repairs and keep your vehicle running smoothly.

Next time you see that thermometer symbol with wavy lines, you’ll know exactly what to do – and it has nothing to do with boats!
