The woman, identified as Mahrah Al Nahyan, 32, who is connected by marriage to Abu Dhabi’s ruling royal family, was later convicted of child neglect following the June 13 incident.

Prosecutors told Southwark Crown Court that the young child had been left unattended while Al Nahyan and a man nearby were unresponsive. Passersby stepped in to keep the toddler safe, raising serious concerns about what might have happened if nobody had intervened.

The case has since sparked intense online reactions, with many people focusing on the child’s safety while others have called for Al Nahyan to receive help for her reported substance-use problems.

Passersby Stepped In After Finding The Toddler Near A Busy Road

The incident occurred in West London on June 13. According to prosecutor Rio Pahlavanpour, members of the public noticed Al Nahyan slumped against railings beside an unconscious man.

Nearby, the three-year-old was barefoot and playing with a scooter close to moving traffic.

The witnesses reportedly realized that the child was unattended and could be in danger. They intervened to keep the toddler away from the road and contacted police, who arrived at approximately 1:50 p.m.

The court heard that Al Nahyan remained unresponsive for around 30 minutes.

Footage recorded by an onlooker reportedly showed her sitting against the railings with her head bowed and her arms crossed. A toy plane and other children’s belongings were scattered nearby, while the man lay unconscious in a doorway.

When Al Nahyan eventually regained consciousness, she allegedly behaved erratically and shouted, “This is not a slaughterhouse; why do you care so much? Why are you so worried?”

Police searched her belongings and found substance-related paraphernalia, although prosecutors said no illegal substances were discovered during the search.

Judge Warned The Child Could Have Been Seriously Injured

One of the most concerning details presented in court involved the toddler running toward the road while chasing a piece of paper.

A member of the public reportedly intervened before the child could move into greater danger.

During sentencing, Judge Mr. Justice Johnson KC strongly criticized Al Nahyan’s actions, emphasizing the risks created by leaving a young child unattended while she was allegedly under the influence of drugs.

“By leaving [the child] to play barefoot in the street while under the influence of drugs, you showed a recklessness and disregard for [the child’s] safety,” the judge said.

He also pointed out that the consequences could have been far more serious if strangers had not stepped in.

The toddler could have been struck by traffic, wandered away and become lost, or encountered someone who might have caused harm. The judge also noted that seeing their mother and the accompanying man unconscious could have been frightening and distressing for a child so young.

The case highlighted how quickly an ordinary moment on a public street can become dangerous when a young child is left without adequate supervision.

Al Nahyan Admitted Child Neglect And Received A Community Sentence

Al Nahyan admitted one charge of child neglect at Southwark Crown Court.

She was sentenced to a two-year community order with a rehabilitation requirement, fined £5,000 (about $6,660), and ordered to pay £1,000 (about $1300) in prosecution costs.

The court also heard that she receives a monthly allowance of £8,000 (about $10,000).

However, much of the hearing focused not only on the circumstances of the incident but also on the steps Al Nahyan had reportedly taken since then to address her substance use.

Her defense argued that the incident was a serious mistake and that she had shown remorse.

Her Defense Says She Has Been Receiving Treatment

Al Nahyan’s barrister, Stephen Vullo KC, told the court that she had been receiving treatment at the Priory center in Woking, Surrey, since July.

According to the defense, she had not taken drugs on the day of the incident but was exhausted following cocaine use in the preceding days.

Her barrister said she had stopped using substances after entering treatment and had demonstrated “significant remorse and resolve to overcome her addiction.”

He also told the court that she intended to complete a three-month treatment program, which was expected to conclude at the end of the month.

Afterward, she reportedly planned to rent a property in the Guildford area, continue treatment as a day patient, and attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

“She made a grave mistake that day, and she knows it,” Vullo said.

The defense’s account presented the incident as a serious lapse in judgment while emphasizing her reported efforts to seek help. Those claims, however, do not change the central concern raised in court: the potential danger to a very young child.

Her Connection To Abu Dhabi’s Ruling Royal Family Adds Another Layer Of Attention

Al Nahyan is connected by marriage to Abu Dhabi’s ruling royal family, one of the world’s wealthiest dynasties.

The Daily Mail has estimated the family’s wealth at more than £250 billion (about $330 billion), bringing additional public attention to a case that might otherwise have remained a local court story.
