Actor Sergio Calderón from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Men in Black’ dies at 77 years old – rest in peace

Reading about the death of a beloved actor is never easy. Sergio Calderón brought a lot of joy to a lot of people, and reading about his death is heartbreaking. His legacy will hopefully live on.

Sergio Calderón was best known for working in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s EndMen In Black and The Ruins. The actor has passed away at the age of 77 years old.

A representative for the actor confirmed the heartbreaking news, saying that the actor was surrounded by family at the time of his death.

“We can confirm that Sergio passed away this morning,” his rep said. “He was in the hospital previously with a bout of pneumonia, not sure that was the cause. He was surrounded by family at the time.”

The actor played Captain Eduardo Villanueva of the Adriatic Sea, in the 2007, third installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise titled At World’s End. He also lent his voice to the video game that followed with the same name At World’s End. He voice acted for the role of Pirate lord.

The actor would routinely share pictures of his time on set for Pirates of the Caribbean. He would post pictures with the franchise’s star, Johnny Depp, and pictures with singer Keith Richards. Richards played the Pirate Lord of Madagascar in the film; in the role he portrayed himself as the father of Depp’s character Jack Sparrow.

In the film Men In Black, Calderón played José. In the 1997 film, his character was the one whose head is displayed on the end of a sword to actor Tommy Lee Jones’ character K. He proudly shared a picture from the scene on social media as well.

The actor’s more recent acting credits included roles in The Ruins and Little Fockers. He also had credits in the 2022 FX series, Better Things, as well as in an episode of Peacock’s The Resort.

The actor had a long and wonderful career spanning over six decades. He worked with Sergio Leone in his 1971 film Duck, You Sucker! and John Houston in The Bridge in the Jungle and Under the Volcano.
