California man dies while snorkeling with wife during honeymoon in Hawaii

What should have been a time to celebrate turned into an absolute disaster for a California couple.

Steven Phan and his wife Brittany of three months were on their honeymoon in Hawaii when Steven drowned while snorkeling, according to a GoFundMe. And to make matters worse, someone stole all of their belongings, including their rental car.

Witnesses told local news they saw a man, later identified as Steven, lying on the sand at Electric Beach on the West side of Oʻahu. The man had been pulled in from the surf after suffering an accident while snorkeling.

The group approached the couple and offered help, and that’s when they learned the two were on their honeymoon.

The one witness who spoke with KHON asked Brittany if they could call someone for her, but when they went looking for her phone it was gone.

“As if the tragedy itself wasn’t difficult enough, now she has to go through the logistics of — because she can’t travel back to home without an ID — she has to go through the due process at the airport to verify. It’s a mess on top of everything.”

Steven received CPR before he was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

A GoFundMe has been set up to assist Brittany with funeral costs and “any unforeseen costs related to Steven’s passing.” So far more than $26,000 has been raised.

Please pray for the Phan family as they move through their grief.
