Donald Trump has revealed the “truth” behind the an AI-generated image that appeared to show him as a Christ-like figure.
The image, shared Sunday night on Truth Social, quickly sparked backlash. He posted an AI-generated image that appeared to show him in a Christ-like role, sparking accusations of blasphemy and “sacrilegious” behavior – not just from critics, but from some of Donald Trump’s own supporters.
When asked about the post, Trump dismissed the controversy and pointed the finger at the media.
What the image showed
The timing also raised eyebrows. Trump posted the image shortly after criticizing Pope Leo XIV, calling him “WEAK” on crime and “terrible” on foreign policy.
The post came on Orthodox Easter, during an ongoing war with Iran, and just minutes after criticizing the head of the Catholic Church, writing on Truth Social: “If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican.”
Speaking to reporters aboard a papal flight to Algeria on Monday, Pope Leo XIV said: “I have no fear of the Trump administration. I will not enter into debate.”
He added that his focus is to “continue on with what I believe is the mission of the Church in the world today.”
Trump’s explanation
Trump himself, however, denied that the image had any religious meaning.
“It wasn’t a depiction, I did post it and I thought it was me as a doctor, and had to do with red cross as a red cross worker, which we support and only the fake news could come up with that one,” he said, according to to VT. He added: “It’s supposed to be me as a doctor, making people better, and I do make people better.”
White House chief photographer Daniel Torok wrote on X that the image was not intended to depict Trump as Jesus. He argued there were no “halos, no thorns, no nail marks, no angels” present.
By Monday morning, the image had been deleted from Trump’s Truth Social account. Speaking to CBS News, Trump said: “Normally I don’t like doing that, but I didn’t want to have anybody be confused.
“People were confused,” he added.
