The bad blood between Megan Rapinoe and Donald Trump has been well recorded in the media. It started three years ago, United States Women’s National Team won the title at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France in 2019.
The former captain of the US Women’s football team was vocal about her stance on Trump. And it seems like Donald Trump did not forget…
Donald Trump clearly has not forgotten his issues with Rapinoe and the US women’s football team. The team was participating in the World Cup and was knocked out in the second round, which marked their earliest exit from the tournament to date.
This was Megan Rapinoe’s last World Cup, and it ended, of course, on a disappointing note. She is set to retire after this tournament with two World Cup titles and an Olympic gold medal to her name.
She has also always been vocal about her left-leaning political views, which has earned her ire from Republican politicians, including Donald Trump. And anyone who remembers 2019 can easily recall how Trump and Rapinoe were not the best of friends.
After their loss in the second round of the tournament they had previously dominated, Donald Trump took his chance and took to Twitter (now known as ‘X’) to express his sentiments on the entire matter. He wrote, “The ‘shocking and totally unexpected’ loss by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to the our once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden,’ wrote Trump on social media.”
“Many of our players were openly hostile to America – No other country behaved in such a manner, or even close,” he wrote.
“WOKE EQUALS FAILURE,” he wrote.
‘Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!!’ he wrote as a 9 word furious jab at the soccer player. Adding a ‘MAGA’ in the end to top off his comment.
Rapinoe shot back with, “It’s a real sad dig into an old bag. She added “I’m just like, “You’re rooting for people to do bad?” Yikes.”
It is clear Rapinoe does not have a lot of fans. Benny Johnson, chief creative officer at Turning Point USA also wrote, “After winning back-to-back World Cups the heavily favored Team USA has been eliminated by Sweden in the [Round of 16].” He went on, “Team USA’s downfall was delivered by anti-America, anti-woman activist Megan Rapinoe’s embarrassing free [penalty] kick here.”
Joey Mannarino, a conservative political strategist, said: “I root for America every single time they compete in sports, except for women’s soccer.” He went on in his criticism, “The game was lost because Megan Rapinoe, the woke piece of trash, missed a penalty kick.” Even going as far as to say, “So Megan now bears the responsibility for why the US lost.”
He added in another jibe, writing, “I am so glad to see it. Go woke, go broke! Megan Rapinoe will now enter retirement with her head hung in shame.”
