‘Father Knows Best’ star Lauren Chapin dead – sad cause of death revealed

Father Knows Best was a standout TV series, and one of its brightest stars was the young Lauren Chapin.

Best remembered as Kathy “Kitten” Anderson, she has sadly passed away at the age of 80.

The past few days have been tough for classic TV fans, first we lost Robert Carradine, and now news has emerged that Lauren Chapin has passed away.

On February 25, 2026, Lauren’s son, Matthew Chapin, shared the update, revealing that his mother had bravely battled a five-year illness.

“I’m at a complete loss for words right now. Please keep my sister and family in your thoughts and prayers as we go through this incredibly tough time,” he wrote.

From wide-eyed child star to honest storyteller

There have been hundreds of child actors to make their name in all manner of TV series and films.

For many of these children, their lives are changed forever, and not always for the better. Some, for example, don’t attend school because of their fame, while others become victims of the business itself.

Lauren Chapin definitely fits into the latter category. The actress became a massive celebrity prior her 10th birthday, and for a time it looked liked everything was on track.

Lauren was just six years old when she landed her breakthrough role. In a 2017 interview with Revue West Michigan, she reflected on how it all began:

“It was my first acting gig,” she said. Coming from a family of performers, a family friend encouraged her mother to let her audition. After multiple callbacks and screen tests, Lauren was chosen from a pool of 250 girls.

Struggled with addiction

She fondly remembered her co-star Robert Young and his family, who helped select the children for the show. Lauren described Robert as “just like a real father.”

Yet fame came with challenges. Lauren later struggled with addiction and legal troubles, and she became outspoken about the toll childhood stardom can take.

“It is very rare that kids that are child actors go on to be adult actors, and so therefore they need to be prepared … to have another career,” she said. “I just do not think children should be actors.”

While Father Knows Best defined her early years, Lauren’s career continued beyond the sitcom. She appeared in shows like Lux Video Theatre, Fireside Theatre, General Electric Theater, and the 1956 film Tension at Table Rock. She also reprised her role in the 1977 TV movies Father Knows Best: Home for Christmas and The Father Knows Best Reunion.

Focusing on faith

Later in life, Lauren focused on faith, ministry, and helping others overcome addiction. She became an author, speaker, and ordained evangelist, appearing on The Today Show, Entertainment Tonight, and The Oprah Winfrey Show to share her story of recovery. Her memoir, Father Does Know Best: The Lauren Chapin Story, and her charity work supporting underprivileged children further highlighted her dedication to helping others.

“Lauren Chapin’s story reminds us that while fame may introduce a person to the world, it is perseverance, honesty, and compassion that define a life well lived,” her memorial page states.

Matthew Chapin later confirmed that his mother passed away after a battle with cancer. “My mother Lauren Chapin passed away from her battle with cancer tonight,” he shared on Facebook.

Actress Erin Murphy also honored Lauren, posting a heartfelt message with a broken heart emoji and sharing photos of the two together over the years. Her post reflected on Lauren’s life from childhood to her later years, highlighting the lasting impact she had on those around her.
