Henry Ruggs III, the former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver, was reportedly driving 156 mph seconds before his vehicle slammed into another, killing a 23-year-old woman and her dog early Tuesday morning.
Ruggs’ blood-alcohol content was 0.161, twice the legal limit in Nevada.
The 22-year-old appeared in court Wednesday where he faces a charge of DUI resulting in death.
The fatal crash was reported around 3:39 a.m. Tuesday at at Rainbow Boulevard and Spring Valley Parkway South.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police were able to determine that Ruggs’ Corvette was moving at 156 mph 2.5 seconds before the crash, and “at time zero,” they determined his vehicle was moving at 127 mph.
Ruggs’, who was driving with his girlfriend, slammed into the rear of a Toyota Rav4. It caught fire, and the 23-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police also noted in their report that the victim’s dog that was also in the vehicle died.
An officer attempted to administer field sobriety tests to Ruggs, but he refused. He was transported to a hospital for treatment. His blood was also taken and during his court appearance prosecutors revealed his blood-alcohol level.
A handgun was also found in Ruggs’ vehicle.
Bail was set at $150,000 and included strict conditions including no alcohol, no driving, surrendering his passport, and confinement to his home.
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson stated it’s possible he will face more charges related to the weapon and injuries his girlfriend suffered in the crash.
Hours after the crash the Las Vegas Raiders released a statement.
“We are devastated by the loss of life and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family,” they wrote in part.
The NFL team released Ruggs later that night.
