Here’s why you should never wear black socks on a plane

Being comfortable on the airplane is crucial for many. But it turns out that there are certain types of clothing you should avoid. A former airline crew member has now revealed that you should avoid wearing black socks on a plane – because it can be dangerous.

When preparing for a flight, most people focus on comfort. Soft clothes, loose shoes, and maybe a hoodie are common choices. However, there’s one small detail many travelers never think about: their socks.

Many passengers remove their shoes on longer flights to feel more comfortable. That’s usually not a problem in itself.

But according to former cabin crew member Kris Major, with more than 25 years of experience, the color of your socks can actually matter more than you might think. Especially if you plan to take your shoes off during the flight. Wearing black socks can cause an unexpected issue.

Speaking with Metro, he explained that dark socks can be difficult to see in the dim lighting inside an aircraft cabin.

“On a night flight, cabin lighting is low, and dark socks blend into the shadows,” Kris Major said, adding that if a passenger stretches their legs out into the aisle while wearing dark socks, the crew might not notice them.

“The trouble starts when passengers stretch out and let their feet drift into the aisle. In those conditions, crew may not spot your feet until the last second,” he continued.

“It’s not about fashion. It’s about visibility. In a narrow aisle, the crew are moving quickly, sometimes carrying hot drinks, and often working around bags, elbows, and half-asleep travellers. Anything that’s hard to see at floor level is an accident waiting to happen.”

Taking off your shoes, especially during a long flight, is common too. It even applies to the airline staff.

However, for this one, it’s crucial to use common sense. If your feet aren’t clean, keep your shoes on.

“One would hope that you’ve had the common decency to have a bath or a shower and put clean socks or stockings or tights on before you get on the aircraft.”

So to summarize: If you plan to take your shoes off during the flight, consider wearing lighter-colored socks. It might seem like a tiny detail, but it could help the cabin crew move safely through the aisle — especially on night flights.
