Plastic surgery has grown more popular in recent years. Surgeons all over the world are performing these types of surgeries. However, some are not supposed to, and the consequences can be brutal. Just like for Yulia Tarasevich.
The former runner-up in the Miss Russia competition decided to go through with a botched cosmetic procedure. But it led to her being unable to close her eyelids – or even smile. She sued the surgeons, hoping to get justice. You won’t believe what she looked like before.
Being comfortable in your skin is one of the most essential things in life. It doesn’t matter if that means being bigger, skinnier, taller or shorter, bald, covered in hair, or anything related to appearance.

Cosmetic surgeries
While some deal with matters by changing hairstyles and going to the gym, others – like Courtney Cox – feel that change at a more fundamental level is needed.
As reported by CNN, liposuction has overtaken breast augmentation as the world’s most popular form of cosmetic surgery. However, there are growing concerns about breast implants and whether they could be linked to cancer, according to published data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS).
Around 15% of all cosmetic surgeries worldwide are contouring procedures, which use suction to remove excessive fat. Moreover, breast augmentation fell to approximately 13%.
Meanwhile, just like when it comes to clothes or design, the trends in cosmetic surgery are changing constantly. In 2021, according to data published from a survey carried out by ISAPS, more than 30 million surgical and non-surgical procedures were carried out.
Not only does it become more popular – the number of cosmetic surgeries skyrocketed from before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Between 2017 and 2021, surgical procedures rose by more than 33%. Botox was the most popular, which grew by over 54%.
But the procedures, as many might know, are not simple and safe. Dr. Gianluca Campiglio, the editor of the report, stated that a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma — a cancer of the immune system — is attributed to the implants when it comes to breast augmentation.
There are many types of cosmetic surgeries one can go through. As mentioned, it is not always safe, and it should always be thought through. Yulia Tarasevich couldn’t close her eyes after nightmare botched surgery
The former runner-up in the Miss Russia competition decided to undergo plastic surgery with whom she thought was a surgeon at a top clinic, costing more than $4000, East2West News reported.
However, it ended in a tragedy.
Last year, the Russian beauty queen, 43, wanted to change some things about her appearance and went to a specialist in the Russian city of Krasnodar. The beauty queen told Channel 1, as quoted by the New York Post, that the surgeon turned her “beautiful, healthy face” into somewhat of a nightmare.
“I came to them with a beautiful, healthy face. I just wanted to correct some nuances caused by aging,” Tarasevich, a mother of two, said. “But sadly, I lost my health.”
Tarasevich underwent facelift surgery, removing excess skin of the eyelids, known as a blepharoplasty, and a cheek fat reduction. However, the surgery left her “disfigured”. She had to undergo an emergency follow-up surgery performed by another doctor to save her eyes from necrosis, the death of the cells in body tissues. In fact, Tarasevich couldn’t even close her eyelids.
“I have scars that formed in my cheeks when they ripped out all my tissue,” she told Channel 1, the New York Post reported. “My eyes don’t close, and I can’t smile. I can’t lift my upper lip. One part of my face doesn’t work at all.”
“I went quietly to the operation, firstly, because all my tests were in order,” she added. “Secondly, because I had plastic surgery before this, I did rhinoplasty, and it went perfectly for me, without any genetic abnormalities.”
Follow-up surgery cost Yulia Tarasevich $27,000
Tarasevich accused the two surgeons, identified as Dr. Andrey Komarov and Dr. Omar Khaled, of not doing their job for the original operation. She filed a complaint and claimed she had gotten scleroderma, a rare genetic condition that causes skin hardening. However, as the investigation went on, it was clear that there was no evidence that Tarasevich suffered from the disease.
“I went quietly to the operation, firstly, because all my tests were in order. Secondly, because I had plastic surgery before this, I did rhinoplasty, and it went perfectly for me, without any genetic abnormalities,” the Russian beauty queen said.
“The surgeons made me the only one guilty for what has happened,” she added. “The doctors, who disfigured my face, relieved themselves of all responsibility. I decided to have my day in court.”
The follow-up surgery reportedly cost Tarasevich $27,000, she claimed. However, Dr. Omar Khaled called it “exaggerated.”
Despite that, the Russian Investigative Committee began investigating the two doctors on the procedure.
“A forensic medical examination has been appointed to determine the severity of the harm to health, and other patients who could have suffered from poor-quality services in this clinic are also being identified,” spokeswoman Anna Pushkina said. “The investigation of the criminal case is ongoing.”
Shortly before the investigation began, Tarasevich took to Instagram, where she thanked her followers for their support.
“Hi, my friends. I would like to really thank each and every one of you who support me. Thanks to each an every one of you from the bottom of my heart,” she wrote.
Surgeon could face six years in prison
Later, the Prosecutor’s Office of the Krasnodar Territory charged Dr Andrey Komarov over the procedure, leaving Yulia Tarasevich in a living nightmare.
The office said he provided services that “did not meet the requirements of consumer health and safety” as it caused severe bodily harm, The Sun reported.
He might face up to six years in prison and a fine of around $5,000 if convicted.
Moreover, Dr. Komarov is also facing a civil case, as Yulia Tarasevich claims to have suffered from depression after the surgery. Moreover, as mentioned, she said she could not close her eyelids or even smile as her face is asymmetrical.

Since this summer, there have been no updates on how the case has proceeded, nor have any pictures of her been posted. Time will tell if Yulia will get the justice she deserves.
