Jill Biden has released her new memoir. In it, the former first lady has revealed new details about her relationship with Melania Trump, or perhaps the lack of one. Jill recalled one of the “one of few” interactions she had with Melania, which was very awkward.
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden got to welcome the Trumps back to the White House in 2025. However, four years earlier, Donald and Melania decided not to welcome Joe and Jill.
The relationship between the presidential couple hasn’t been at its best, and now, in her new memoir, Jill Biden has given insight into her frosty encounters with Melania.
In her memoir, View from the East Wing, Jill Biden hinted that tensions between her and Melania Trump may have originated in the FBI’s 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.
According to Jill, Melania appeared to hold Joe Biden responsible for the raid, which was part of an investigation into classified documents that Donald Trump had taken with him after leaving the White House.
While the search took place during Joe Biden’s presidency, the Department of Justice has repeatedly stated that the decision to obtain a warrant was made independently and without presidential involvement.
Jill Biden shares insight into her relationship with Melania Trump
Writing about the situation, Jill expressed sympathy for Melania.
“I have compassion for her, having been subject to the same kind of search,” Jill wrote. “I knew how distressing it was to have agents rummage through your underwear drawer.”
She was referring to the FBI’s 2023 search of the Bidens’ home in Wilmington, Delaware, during which agents also sought classified documents.
While Donald and Joe met more often, not least during the debates, the same wasn’t true of Melania and Jill. However, they did share a ride during a motorcade to the U.S Capitol when Donald Trump was sworn in as President of the United States a second time.
Now, Jill Biden has recalled the ‘awkward’ moment she and Jill shared in the vehicle.
“The presidents’ car was likely frosty too, but at least they’d spent considerable time in each other’s company,” Jill Biden wrote. “This would be one of few interactions Melania and I had ever had.”

Further, the former First Lady recalled how Melania was not especially keen on speaking. Their relationship has been frosty for quite some time, not least, according to insiders, after Melania refused to invite Jill to the traditional White House tea and tour before Joe’s 2021 inauguration.
“Jill was livid and never forgot the slight — especially as she’d been waiting and waiting for the call to come,” a source claimed, per AOL. “She pointed to it as another example of Melania’s bad manners.”
“She said it was downright disrespectful of them and violated another long-standing tradition. It was hard not to take the freeze-out personally,” the source continued.
Elsewhere on the ride, Jill Biden wrote that Melania Trump offered a very brief response when she asked about Barron Trump and his studies.
“‘NYU,’ Melania said, looking out the window,” Jill Biden wrote in Views from the East Wing. “Melania kept trying to switch the topic to the weather.”
