While on television Jonathan Scott is a self-assured contractor who knows his stuff, in real life, he is still figuring out his relationship with his longtime girlfriend Zooey Deschanel’s kids.

Jonathon Scott who is one half of the famous ‘Property Brothers,’ recently opened up about his experience of being a step-father to his girlfriend Zooey Deschanel’s children. The reality television star opened up in an interview he did with his brother Drew Scott, he opened up about his relationship with 6-year-old Charlie and 7-year-old Elise.
He opened up about what Deschanel’s kids refer to him as and how much hurt it has caused him. He said, “They have their dad and they have a great relationship with him, so he’s daddy. I couldn’t say papa because that’s what they call their grandpa — though at one point we tried to change the narrative and get them to call me papa instead, but they weren’t having it,” told Scott, 45.
“Eventually, they came up with ‘my Jonathan,'” he added. “So, whenever they tell a story they say, ‘There’s daddy, there’s mommy, and he’s my Jonathan.'”
But the kids did not warm up to his presence in their lives immediately, Scott shared.
“One thing that was a struggle early on was that the kids didn’t necessarily run up and jump in my arms and give me a big hug,” shared the Property Brothers star.
“I also remember several times where they’d be out with other kids and someone would say, ‘Oh your daddy’s so funny,’ and they’d be like, ‘That’s not my daddy, he’s my Jonathan,'” added Scott. He went on to say how that made him feel, “That would hurt a little bit.”
He also understands that the children did not mean it in a mean-spirited way. He said, “not a mean thing to say– it’s just how they know me.”
But Jonathan Scott added, he talks to the children to explain to them how he feels. He keeps an “open dialogue” with them in order to let them know about his feelings as well.
“Over time, I worked on expressing my feelings to them and the things that make me sad and happy. I think it’s good for kids to know that grownups have feelings, too,” he said.
He further went on to add how he thought this would benefit their relationship with one another once the kids are older. He said, “Having that open dialogue with them is so important because as they get older, they’ll continue to keep those lines open.”
