Karoline Leavitt is leaving her role as White House press secretary, President Donald Trump announced Wednesday. Now, Leavitt has spoken out, giving the real reason why she is stepping down.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her role at the end of August. On Wednesday, in a social media post, Trump shared the news, saying that Leavitt is leaving “so she can spend more time with her beautiful young children and family,”
The announcement of Leavitt’s departure comes less than a month after the 29-year-old returned from maternity leave following the birth of her second child in May. Trump said it’s “a decision I totally understand and respect.”
“Karoline will now be one of my top outside advisors, and an influential voice within the Republican Party, as we work to defy History, and conclusively win the Midterm Elections. Karoline has been a real leader in the White House, and has done a phenomenal job fighting for Justice, Liberty, and Freedom, since 2018, including our Historic Re-Election Campaign of 2024. Karoline has been one of the best White House Press Secretaries in the History of the Office. Thank you, Karoline, for a job well done,” the president wrote on Truth Social.
Karoline Leavitt made history when she, at the age of 27, became the youngest White House press secretary in history. Before taking on the job as press secretary, she was Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign spokesperson.
Leavitt also worked for Trump during his first administration as well as for Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik.

Over his two terms, Trump has now had four press secretaries. Besides Leavitt, Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Kayleigh McEnany and Stephanie Grisham have taken on the role.
Before joining the Trump 2024 campaign, Leavitt also ran for Congress in her home state of New Hampshire. However, she ultimately lost the general election.
Not long after Trump announced the news, Leavitt took to X to explain her decision. She said the role as White House press secretary has been “the honor and adventure of a lifetime.”
She thanked Donald Trump for the opportunity to work in his administration and pointed out that her two children are the reason she is living. Balancing both being a mother and having a stressful job has been “rewarding yet challenging,” she added.
“The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary — and that is why I have ultimately made the bittersweet decision to depart the White House and embark on a new chapter in my life,” Leavitt wrote.
Who will replace her?
It’s yet unclear who will get the job as White House press secretary moving forward. During Leavitt’s maternity leave, several administration officials held press conferences in her absence.
Those included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio. and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
