Nearly 20 years after Madeleine McCann vanished during a family holiday in Portugal, the man at the center of the investigation has delivered a cold warning as pressure builds behind the scenes for a possible UK trial.
Christian Brueckner, the 48-year-old convicted German rapist who remains the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, is once again facing intense scrutiny after reports claimed British investigators are exploring whether he could be extradited to the UK.
Brueckner, who was reportedly “just out of jail for petrol theft” when Maddie went missing, has never been formally charged over her disappearance, despite being identified by German prosecutors as the main suspect nearly six years ago.
“We believe that he is responsible for the disappearance of Madeleine McCann and that he killed Madeleine McCann,” Hans Wolter, a lead investigator, said in September 2025 when the suspect was released from prison in Germany after serving seven years for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal.
That assault took place in Praia da Luz, the quiet Algarve resort that would later be known around the world as the place 3-year-old Maddie disappeared from on May 3, 2007, while vacationing with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, and her younger twin siblings.
‘Bring Brueckner to Britain’
The case has become one of the world’s most closely followed missing-person investigations, yet no one has ever been charged in connection with her disappearance.
Now, according to The Telegraph, senior officers at Scotland Yard are hoping enough evidence can be gathered to potentially bring Brueckner to Britain before the 20th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance next year.
“Next year marks 20 years since Madeleine McCann went missing. If the evidence is strong enough to extradite the prime suspect and try him here, that is what we would seek to do,” a Scotland Yard insider told The Telegraph.
“Clearly, there are numerous hurdles but our priority at the moment is to amass the strongest evidence we can against that prime suspect,” the source added.
The latest developments have renewed public attention on a case that has haunted investigators and Madeleine’s family for almost two decades.
‘Hot air’
Still, bringing Brueckner to the UK could prove extremely difficult.
Under German law, extraditing German citizens to countries outside the European Union comes with major legal barriers, and prosecutors in Germany appear skeptical that a British trial is close.
Wolter, the German prosecutor who first publicly linked Brueckner to the toddler’s disappearance, pushed back against the speculation while speaking to the Mirror.
“I suspect this is just hot air again. Extradition would require an arrest warrant. But there certainly isn’t one,” Wolter said.
“Like all countries, Germany only extradites individuals if there is an arrest warrant against them. And I actually think it’s out of the question that there is an arrest warrant against [Brueckner] in the Maddie case.”
He added: “I am not in a position to say whether the British police can obtain an arrest warrant from a British court.”
‘We will never give up’
The renewed focus on Brueckner comes only days after Madeleine’s mom and dad released an emotional statement to acknowledge the almost two decades that have passed since their daughter disappeared.
“19 years. The search goes on….to find our Madeleine, to achieve some justice, to make the world that bit safer,” Kate and Gerry – both physicians – wrote in a social media post May 2.
“We remain very grateful for all our support – from friends and family, people we know and those we don’t – and from the police and authorities for their continued determination and effort. Thank you,” they shared, adding: “For Madeleine, who we love and miss every day, we will never give up.”
Brueckner’s warning
As speculation about a possible extradition continued to grow this week, The Mirror reached out to Brueckner on May 5 and asked whether he was concerned about the latest developments surrounding the case.
The suspect, earlier described by Wolters as “fundamentally dangerous,” said he was aware of the latest claims but insisted he had no idea what could happen next.
Then he delivered the brief warning that has since fueled even more attention around the investigation.
“No comment…I have good lawyers,” he told the outlet.
