For some men, apparently, looking tough isn’t enough. They want their ears to tell the story for them.

A bizarre cosmetic trend is reportedly gaining attention in Russia, with some men allegedly paying to deliberately deform their ears so they resemble the “cauliflower ears” commonly associated with boxers, wrestlers and MMA fighters.
And yes, people apparently want to pay for an injury that athletes usually spend years trying to avoid.
So, What Exactly Is Cauliflower Ear?
Cauliflower ear is a permanent deformity that can develop after repeated trauma to the outer ear.
When the ear is hit, the skin can separate from the cartilage underneath, disrupting its blood supply. Blood can collect in the area, and if the injury isn’t treated promptly, scar tissue and misshapen cartilage can leave the ear looking swollen, lumpy and folded.
It’s particularly common among people involved in contact sports such as wrestling, boxing and mixed martial arts.
For many fighters, it’s simply an unfortunate consequence of the sport. Some athletes even have ear injuries drained and treated specifically to prevent the deformity from becoming permanent.
But according to reports, some men are now skipping the years of fighting and going straight for the finished look.
Some Men Are Reportedly Paying For The Look
According to Russian Telegram channel Baza, as reported by VICE, men in Russia have reportedly been paying around 6,000 rubles (about $70 per ear) to have their ears deliberately deformed.
The supposed motivation? For intimidation.
The idea appears to be that someone with visibly damaged ears might be assumed to have spent years fighting, making other people think twice before confronting them.
There’s just one problem with that strategy.
Your ears can look like they belong to an experienced fighter without actually proving that you’ve ever stepped inside a ring.
A Psychologist Says Real Strength Looks Very Different
Psychologist Ekaterina Trofimova discussed the phenomenon with Moskva 24, arguing that genuine confidence doesn’t necessarily come with an exaggerated display of masculinity.
“Sometimes true strength hides behind a mask of outward composure and absolute tranquility,” she said.
In other words, someone who is genuinely confident in their abilities may not feel the need to advertise them. That makes the whole idea of deliberately creating a combat-sports injury even more ironic.
Someone could spend money trying to convince strangers that they’re dangerous, while a genuinely skilled fighter might be standing nearby looking completely unremarkable.
The Look Comes With Real Risks
There’s also an important detail that can get lost when cauliflower ear is treated like a fashion statement; it’s the result of trauma.
Untreated cauliflower ear can become permanent, and complications can include infection and hearing problems. Reconstructive surgery may sometimes be needed to restore the ear’s shape.
So while the finished appearance might be associated with toughness, getting there isn’t exactly a harmless beauty treatment.
