A woman has taken to Reddit to explain how she sparked an intense family feud over her son’s greedy eating habits!
Every Thanksgiving, this woman said that she hosts a pre-dinner charcuterie board as a prelude to the main feast.
This year, however, things took an unexpected turn when her cheese-loving son devoured the carefully curated offerings meant for the Thanksgiving meal, leaving the family in the midst of a culinary conundrum… Keep reading to find out what happened!
This woman’s annual charcuterie board has become a beloved tradition in her household. She wrote on the “Am I The A*****e” forum that she spares no expense on the charcuterie board, serving it up as a delightful pre-dinner snack for family and guests so that no one is left hungry before the main Thanksgiving meal at 6 pm.
Her 16-year-old son, known for his love of cheese, found himself in hot water after indulging in the delights of the charcuterie board a day before Thanksgiving. Despite clearly labeling the items that were to be reserved for the holiday feast, the son couldn’t resist the temptation, devouring various fancy meats and scoffing every block of cheese his mom had purchased for the occasion.
Understandably upset, the woman confronted her son about his greedy eating habits. “I truly was p***ed since I worked extra hours to pay for it since the prices are awful now for a nice cheese,” she wrote, adding that she demanded her son replace the entire board, which would cost around $70 (one cheese alone was valued at $18).
The son seemed to think the whole affair was rather humorous, and he told his mother that he would not be footing the bill. So, the woman gave her son an ultimatum – either he replaces the items he scoffed down or he forgoes the Thanksgiving meal entirely, settling for a simple sandwich.
Still, the woman’s son didn’t care, remaining steadfast in his refusal to contribute financially.
To make matters worse, the woman revealed that her husband has chosen to side with their son, clearly not grasping the depth of her frustration over the charcuterie board. As tensions only continue to escalate, the woman said her family will likely have to do Thanksgiving without it.
One person took to the comments saying that the woman (referred to as OP or Original Poster in the comments section) was not in the wrong. “It’s not just the money – it was the time planning, the drive to, the shopping, the LABELLING DO NOT EAT THIS, the mental calculation of how much extra time OP would have to work to pay for the food,” they wrote.
Another user agreed, adding: “That’s what got my attention, too: having to work EXTRA HOURS to be able to afford it, planning everything out, and clearly labeling the food. It wasn’t just a hungry teen, it was completely selfish. Making him pay to replace the food would be the start of the consequences, IMO.”
Some people took it one step further and accused the woman’s husband of enabling his son’s entitled behavior. “What’s worse is that the kid’s father doesn’t believe the kid deserves consequences. Would he feel differently if the kid was borrowing Dad’s fishing gear, or new golf clubs, or borrowed his car when he had been explicitly told not to? Eating all of the food set aside for company is no different than taking cash out of his Mother’s purse,” their comment read.
It continued: “If my kid did this I would send him to the store to replace the cheese—even if I had to drive him there—the day before thanksgiving about 5pm. I might even ‘forget’ to put a few items on the list, so that he had to go back in and wait in line again. Rest assured, he would work off that money the day after Thanksgiving.”
