The search for Nancy Guthrie took a chilling turn after a group in Mexico received an anonymous tip claiming the missing woman had been buried in an unmarked grave near the U.S.-Mexico border.
Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since February 1. A large-scale investigation has been ongoing for months, with numerous theories surrounding the case. Recently, criticism has been directed at Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.
FBI Director Kash Patel has claimed authorities in Arizona delayed the FBI’s involvement early in the investigation.
“We were kept out of the investigation”
Speaking to Sean Hannity on an episode of Hang Out with Sean Hannity, Patel alleged that the sheriff’s office sidelined the FBI for several days.
“What we, the FBI, do is say, ‘Hey, we’re here to help,’” Patel told Hannity. “What do you need, what can we do? And for four days, we were kept out of the investigation.”
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos quickly disputed Patel’s claim, saying an FBI Task Force member had already been notified by the time he arrived at the scene on the night Guthrie disappeared.
“The FBI was promptly notified by both our department and the Guthrie family,” Nanos said, per NBC.
Search for Nancy Guthrie
Now, a Mexican group dedicated to locating missing people has joined the search for Nancy Guthrie after receiving an anonymous tip claiming she may be buried near the U.S.-Mexico border in an unmarked grave, according to the New York Post.
Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, head of Buscando Corazones Nogales, confirmed the group received the tip on Wednesday.
“We received an anonymous call telling us that the woman’s [Guthrie’s] remains were in the Mariposa area — in a grave over a stream,” Ayala Ortiz told El Imparcial, according to the New York Post.
The group conducted an initial search in an area where 25 unmarked graves have previously been discovered. However, the effort did not provide any answers about Guthrie’s whereabouts and ultimately came up empty.
