The story of Mica Miller is once again drawing attention following the release of a new Netflix documentary examining her life, marriage and final days.
Death of the Pastor’s Wife, a three-part docuseries that premiered on August 26, takes a closer look at Mica’s relationship with South Carolina pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller and the circumstances surrounding her death in April 2024.
Among the material featured in the documentary are Mica’s personal journals, which have prompted viewers to take a closer look at what she wrote in the period before her death.
The filmmakers were given access to an “archive” of material left behind by Mica with permission from her family. The collection included her journals, home videos, and text messages. They also show footage from JP’s church services and interviews with people who knew Mica.
Her loved ones say the situation inside her marriage had become increasingly controlling and claim her faith was used against her. Evidence that surfaced after her death indicated that Mica had alleged she was being subjected to abuse by her husband.
“The most private and interior part of her”
One journal page shown in the documentary seems to have a list of things Mica needed to do, including contacting the IRS and obtaining an affidavit.
Julia Willoughby Nason, the documentary’s co-director, told Tudum that the journal entries offered an unusually personal look at Mica.
The entries, she said, “really showed the most private and interior part of her, which her family was open to us working with to bring her to life.”
Another handwritten note contains an allegation from Mica that she had experienced abuse “in every way I can think of – emotionally, sexually, spiritually, financially and physically.”
JP has denied the allegations and has never been charged in connection with Mica’s death.

Mica, who grew up in the church, met JP at Solid Rock Church when she was a teenager. The two eventually married in 2017. According to concerns raised by Mica’s loved ones in the documentary, the marriage became increasingly toxic. The series also examines allegations that Mica was stalked and harassed as she tried to leave the relationship.
Mica ultimately filed for divorce. Just two days after Miller was served with the divorce papers, she was found dead.
Before her death, Mica called 911 and told the operator: “I’m about to kill myself, and I want my family to find me.”
The North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ultimately ruled that Mica died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Her loved ones have continued to question the circumstances surrounding her death and search for answers ever since.
Viewers are examining the journal entries
One particular entry has triggered speculation online.
After seeing what appeared to be Mica’s list of tasks and preparations, one viewer wrote on X: “This does not seem like a list made by someone who is planning to end her life. She was ready to expose him,” according to Tyla.
JP has also faced separate federal charges related to alleged conduct involving Mica. In December 2025, a federal grand jury indicted him on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators.
Miller faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison for the cyberstalking charge and up to two years for making false statements. He could also face a fine of as much as $250,000. He is currently out of jail on a $100,000 bond. His federal trial is scheduled for October 2026.
Miller has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges.
