Bryan Kohberger, a graduate student in criminology, is set to stand trial for the murders of 21-year-olds Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, and 20-year-olds Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle. All four were found dead on November 13, 2022 in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho.

As the trial for Kohberger is set to begin, a new heartbreaking detail about the case has come to light. Right before their murder, both Madison and Kaylee were debating whether they should go out somewhere in search of food. The two had just returned from a night out with their other roommates, Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke.

Both Mortensen and Funke survived the murder as they were in their bedrooms at the time, and the killer did not have knowledge of their presence.

The new revelation comes to light after Judge Steven Hippler who has green lit prosecutors request to allow the texts and 911 calls from the surviving roommates to be used as evidence in the trial.

The evidence shows how Funke, Mogen, Mortensen, and Goncalves all gathered together that night to discuss the events of earlier that evening. The court order stated that they ‘talked for a while before going to bed’ at 2 am.

The group debated whether they should go out for a late night snack, with the court order stating, “The roommates debated going out to a food truck for a late snack, prompting D.M. to send text at 2:10 a.m. to an Uber driver she knew to see if he was driving.”

“Ultimately, however, the girls decided to just go to bed.”

At the time, Kernodle and her boyfriend Chapin were still out.

The murder spree is thought to have taken place between 4 am and 4.25 am. The murderer, who was masked, fled the scene shortly after. Mortensen saw the murderer and was the only person to see them; they described them as masked with ‘bushy eyebrows.’

Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt confirmed that the cause of death for all four was due to stabbing, saying the four students had been ‘butchered.’

It took two months for law enforcement to charge and arrest someone which was Kohberger. He had driven to his parent’s place in Pennsylvania and was handcuffed in the Scranton area.

Kohberger will stand trial for the murders from July 30, which is when jury selection will begin.
