For years, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle built a life an ocean away from the royal family.
Now, with their children back in Britain and the Sussexes once again living closer to the monarchy, an old question has suddenly become impossible to ignore.
Family dynamics are complicated, and no one lives in isolation. When one member makes a move, everyone else can feel the impact — even inside the royal family.
The Sussexes’ return to the U.K. has reignited attention on the brothers’ deeply strained relationship — and according to reports, William and Kate aren’t rushing to welcome the development with open arms.
Instead, the Prince and Princess of Wales are said to be watching carefully and keeping their distance. According to Princess Diana biographer Andrew Morton, the Sussexes’ return has “changed the narrative”, especially for Prince William.
William was reportedly caught off guard
For Harry, the move to U.K could provide something he has struggled to find since leaving royal life: a genuine opportunity to reconnect with the country he once called home.
But being physically closer to William doesn’t necessarily mean the brothers are any closer emotionally.
Harry had previously spoken about spending more time in Britain, so the idea wasn’t entirely foreign to his family. Still, royal commentator Kinsey Schofield said the scale of the Sussexes’ return reportedly surprised William.
”Prince William was blindsided,” Schofield told Fox News Digital.
She suggested that William now finds himself dealing with a situation he never requested and certainly did not create.
”William now has to navigate a situation he did not create, did not ask for and, given the state of their relationship, almost certainly would not have chosen,” she said.
Not thought to have spoken in nearly 4 years
Other commentators have described William and Kate as concerned about what the Sussexes’ return could mean for the family.
British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard characterized the atmosphere as uneasy, pointing to what she called an ongoing “endless Sussex soap opera.”
”It’s about broken trust,” Chard said.
Prince William and Harry are believed to have had little to no contact for nearly four years, dating back to Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in September 2022. Although the brothers were both present at their uncle Lord Robert Fellowes’ funeral in 2024, reports suggest they were in the same room without speaking to each other.
From William’s reported perspective, the problem goes far beyond a sibling disagreement. Harry and Meghan’s interviews, documentaries and commercial projects have repeatedly revisited their experiences with the royal family — something William has reportedly found difficult to accept.
Kensington Palace, however, has made no attempt to publicly address the claims.
”We would never comment on private family matters,” a spokesperson said.
And that silence may be telling.
Could be closer without being close
The Sussexes’ return has naturally raised questions about whether Harry and William might finally find a way to repair their relationship.
According to People, one source close to the Prince and Princess of Wales told People that William and Kate are deliberately avoiding an emotional or immediate response.
”They are watching this space,” the source said. “It’s private — they don’t feel the need to say anything or demonstrate anything outwardly.”
That doesn’t sound like a dramatic reconciliation.
Instead, any progress is expected to happen slowly.
A source described a potential reconciliation as ”a slow build” and added that ”There is a deep sense of betrayal.”
That history could make even a simple family gathering complicated.
William and Kate were reportedly at Balmoral with King Charles III as news of Harry and Meghan’s return spread. According to reports, Charles had learned about the move only a few days before it became public.
Royal broadcaster Neil Sean claimed Harry and Meghan had not been invited for a private meeting with the King at that point and suggested that a meeting would not take place while William was at Balmoral.
”I’ve been told he has no desire to connect on any level with his younger brother,” Sean said of William.
Neither William nor Kensington Palace has confirmed that claim.
Harry and Meghan’s representatives have also kept quiet about possible private family meetings.
”We do not comment on the family’s private travel arrangements or meetings with the extended family,” a spokesperson said.
Harry ”never stopped” missing Britain
For all the controversy surrounding the Sussexes, sources close to Harry say there was always something about Britain he missed.
California offered the couple privacy and freedom from the daily pressures of royal life. But according to people familiar with Harry’s life there, he never completely recreated the sense of community he had known in Britain.
“Harry never really stopped missing home,” a source close to the couple said. ”He’s missed that sense of connection and belonging. Britain is still home in many ways.”
His ongoing charitable commitments also give him reasons to spend time in Britain. Preparations for the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham are already underway, and Harry is expected to remain heavily involved.
The children may be an even bigger reason for the family’s renewed connection to Britain. Meghan has reportedly wanted Archie and Lilibet to understand both sides of their heritage rather than growing up knowing only California.
During their July 2026 visit, the children spent time with King Charles at Highgrove and later visited Althorp, Princess Diana’s childhood home and final resting place.
For Harry, introducing his children to Diana’s family history carries obvious emotional weight.
The Highgrove reunion was particularly significant because Charles had reportedly not seen Archie and Lilibet in more than four years.
An ally described the meeting as “a real positive.”
And with the King’s ongoing cancer treatment, being thousands of miles apart suddenly carries a very different meaning.r
The Sussexes return without palace rules
The biggest difference between this chapter and Harry and Meghan’s old life in Britain is simple: they are coming back on their own terms.
They are no longer working royals. There is no palace machinery controlling their professional schedules, approving their interviews or managing their public appearances.
They have their own businesses, staff, projects and media relationships.
That independence could create a new headache for the monarchy.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams warned that the palace cannot control what the Sussexes announce or when they make public appearances.
Because official royal events are planned months ahead, there is always the possibility that Harry and Meghan’s activities could overlap with William and Kate’s schedule and draw attention away from official engagements.
“There’s a sense that William is going to have to be watching over his shoulder the whole time,” a source told Vanity Fair. ”He doesn’t know what his brother is going to spring on them all next.”
Kinsey Schofield also pointed out that Harry remains the King’s son and Meghan still holds the title of Duchess of Sussex, meaning their public presence continues to attract enormous attention even though they are no longer working members of the Firm.
And Buckingham Palace still has one major advantage: control over official royal access.
The Sussexes can live in Britain without becoming working royals again. But that freedom comes with a price.
”Meghan may be returning without palace restrictions, but she is also returning without palace protection,” Schofield said. ”You don’t get one without losing the other.”
