Kate Middleton to spoil her children amid “frightening” year

Prince William and Kate Middleton have celebrated Christmas and New Year’s Eve with their Royal Family members, including their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. After an incredibly tough year when the Princess of Wales received a cancer diagnosis and went through with treatment, the Wales family has now been able to spend a lot of quality time together for the holidays.

It’s not yet clear what is in the royal calendar for this year. Prince William was abroad several times in 2024. But because of her treatment, Kate has not joined him, but there is a possibility that that will change moving forward.

Although the treatment has been very challenging, both physically and mentally, for Kate Middleton, he has been able to spend a lot of time with her children in the last year. The fact that their mother has been very ill has indeed been scary and stressful for the kids. But as Kate is now cancer-free, reports state that George, Charlotte, and Louis’ parents now have something big planned for them in the coming month.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are all growing up fast. The children have had some very cool experiences this year; for example, George got to watch the UEFA Euro 2024 final football match between Spain and England at the Olympiastadion in Berlin with his father, Prince William, and Charlotte got to meet the superstar Taylor Swift after one of her concerts in London.

However, even though there have been plenty of fun activities, 2024 was a year full of frustration, sadness, and fright as their mother, Kate Middleton, was diagnosed with cancer. The Princess of Wales announced the news in March after undergoing an abdominal surgery two months earlier.

While the world got word of Kate being cancer-free through a video message, George, Charlotte, and Louis got the news differently. It was understood that Prince William and Kate Middleton decided to share the news of her cancer diagnosis with the world the day George, Charlotte, and Louis left school for their Easter break.

So, how do you tell your children that you have cancer? One person, King Charles’ former butler Grant Harrold, argued that Prince William and Kate Middleton explained it differently to them.

How Prince William & Kate Middleton told their children about the princess’ cancer

Speaking with the NY Post, Harrold, who worked for Charles for seven years when he was the Prince of Wales, said that the couple most likely “sugarcoated” her health issues when they broke the news to Prince Louis.

Moreover, Harrold stated that since Louis was only five at the time, it was fair to assume that the young prince “probably doesn’t understand too much” about his mother’s cancer diagnosis.

“I’m sure it was a very difficult and very different conversation between children,” Harrold told the NY Post. “For instance, for Louis I’m sure the conversation was more sugarcoated than it was with George and Charlotte.”

“The older children can understand more, so I’d imagine it was a little more frank but undoubtedly staying positive, which is so important,” he added. “That’s why when you now look at the picture of Kate with her three children, it brings a tear to your eye. For any mother to have that conversation is huge and you can imagine Charlotte and George are going to be good supports for her.”

The former royal butler concluded, “It’s a tricky one. I’m sure the children will be handling it as any kids would be expected to handle it, but I think their parents are very good at being calm and collected, and I think that will rub off on the children,” he told the NY Post.

Kate Middleton announced she was cancer-free in September

Kate Middleton made only a few appearances last year. She made her comeback at Trooping the Colour and later appeared with her sister Pippa and daughter Charlotte at the Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final. In September, the Princess of Wales announced that she had completed her chemotherapy with a deeply personal video, describing her journey as “incredibly tough” for the entire family.

Kate said, “The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family. Life as you know it can change in an instant and we have had to find a way to navigate the stormy waters and road unknown. The cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you. With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything.”

“This time has above all reminded William and me to reflect and be grateful for the simple yet important things in life, which so many of us often take for granted. Of simply loving and being loved. Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus. Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes. I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can.”

The Princess of Wales continued, “Despite all that has gone before I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life. William and I are so grateful for the support we have received and have drawn great strength from all those who are helping us at this time. Everyone’s kindness, empathy and compassion has been truly humbling. To all those who are continuing their own cancer journey – I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. Out of darkness, can come light so let that light shine bright.”

Prince George, Princess Charlotte & Prince Louis received gifts from well-wishers

The Royal Family celebrated Christmas at Sandringham as usual. Well-wishers got to greet the royals on their way to church on Christmas morning. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis all got Christmas gifts from members of the public. Six-year-old Louis was handed all sorts of gifts, including chocolate, crackers, flowers, and even stuffed toys.

According to the Daily Mail, when one well-wisher gave him a Father Christmas headband, he accepted it, “politely thanked the person who gifted it, and returned it to his father and siblings.” Prince William, who also greeted many well-wishers along the way to church, was amused about his youngest son’s present haul, telling him: “You’ve got that as well?”

Although Louis seemed overjoyed with all the presents given to him by members of the public, the Daily Mail reported that he appeared to “struggle to keep hold of everything he had received.” At one point, he even turned to his dad and asked, “Papa, can you carry some?”

It’s also understood that William and Kate ‘lavished’ their children with presents after a very challenging year. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis have greatly supported Kate and her family and have continued to charm royal fans during public engagements. The royal children, second, third, and fourth in the line of succession, have not been seen much in the last year and have only appeared at a few events.

Prince William & Kate Middleton “cautious about exposing” their children

George, Charlotte, and Louis were all present during the June Trooping the Color celebration. They joined their parents in early December for their mother’s Together at Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are trying their best to give their children a normal childhood, which, of course, must be very tricky considering their position. Speaking to Hello Magazine, royal expert Ingrid Seward said that the Prince and Princess of Wales are well aware of how things can change quickly in the modern age of social media and the internet.

“Like many famous parents, they are cautious about exposing the children to too much scrutiny in this digital age,” Seward said. “They know they must produce the children at certain times, but I think they very much keep them under wraps the rest of the time.”

Steward continued, saying that compared to the royal children in previous generations, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis have a “more more ordinary and informal life” as they are “not surrounded by nannied and staff.” Although the children are known to have a nanny, Maria Borallo, who’s been with William and Kate since 2014, the royal expert said that the kids are “very much with their parents.”

“Kate will be wanting to spoil” Prince George, Princess Charlotte & Prince Louis

Speaking on their sibling dynamic, Ingrid Seward stated, “The three of them seem to get on incredibly well. They’re close in age, they all enjoy sports, they’re bound by the situation they’re in and they’re all in it together. And I think that makes them all closer.”

As mentioned, 2024 has been a very challenging year for the Royal Family, and Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis have all lived in uncertainty, possibly not knowing exactly how their mother has been doing or what cancer really is. Therefore, Seward claimed that Prince William and Kate Middleton will be sure to treat their children to some extra special surprises in 2025.

“Kate will be wanting to spoil them a bit, because it’s very frightening for children when their parents are that ill, so I think they will be up for a few treats this year,” she told Hello! Magazine. “I think William and Kate might take the children skiing during the Easter holidays and will probably be planning a big summer holiday, because as far as we know they didn’t go anywhere last year.”
