Recognize these signs of breast cancer? This picture of lemons can save lives

An image of twelve lemons is spreading like wildfire on Facebook right now. The reason? The picture explains in simple terms how to check yourself for breast cancer—and potentially save your life.

Earlier this week, Facebook users were sharing hearts to raise awareness for breast cancer. But one woman skipped the hearts and wrote a message that was a real eye-opener for many.

Erin Smith Chieze wrote on her Facebook page that “cute hearts” won’t help anyone. Instead, she posted a photo showing how breasts look and feel. The image soon went viral, and it’s easy to see why. Erin also shared her personal experiences, including some quite affecting lines.

“I knew what breast cancer was. I knew all about self exams, but a picture of what to look for keyed me into knowing I had a terminal disease,” she wrote. “We need to give REAL information, not cute hearts. Without having seen a picture randomly with real information, I wouldn’t have known what to look for. Do us a favor, stop playing games with my life and start truly helping people.”

The image Erin shared was a part of a campaign called “Know Your Lemons,” created by World Wide Breast Cancer. The image was created for both men and women to help each other detect breast cancer in time. The aim of the image is for more people to get help.

Even though breast cancer is treatable, it is often detected too late. Thousands of people are mobilizing and sharing this picture. Please join the cause and share it to your Facebook page.
