Dentist Margot López explained that the simplest explanation could be something as ordinary as not cleaning the tongue thoroughly. She also noted that dry mouth, certain autoimmune conditions, medication use, or other health factors could potentially contribute to a white coating.
Another dentist, Denisse B. Pérez, said there are numerous possible causes, many of which are temporary and harmless. Common reasons include bacteria buildup, food debris, dehydration, reduced saliva production, smoking, medication side effects, and certain medical conditions.
Experts stressed that a proper diagnosis requires far more than a visual observation. Medical history, symptoms, physical examinations, and additional testing are often necessary before any conclusions can be made.
Dentist Arantxa Villegas added that factors such as recent illness, fever, mouth breathing, medication-induced dry mouth, or oral thrush could potentially contribute to a white appearance on the tongue. However, she emphasized that none of these possibilities can be confirmed through images alone.
Health professionals also pointed out that stage lighting, camera angles, video quality, and overexposure can dramatically alter how facial and oral features appear on screen. In some cases, bright lighting can make the tongue appear much whiter than it actually is.
While the speculation may have been entertaining for some viewers, experts warned that drawing conclusions about a person’s health based on viral clips can spread misinformation and create unnecessary concern.
The discussion ultimately evolved into a broader conversation about oral hygiene. Dentists noted that tongue cleaning is often overlooked despite being an important part of oral care. Regular tongue brushing or the use of a tongue scraper can help reduce bacteria buildup, bad breath, and the accumulation of debris that may cause a coated appearance.
