Tragic discovery: missing brothers found after flood

The devastating floods in Valencia, Spain, which began on October 29, are being called the worst the country has seen in decades.

Over 220 lives have been lost, and the efforts to rebuild entire communities swept away by the raging waters continue.

Among the victims of this natural disaster were two young brothers, Rubén and Izan Matías Calatayud, whose story has left the nation heartbroken.

It was an ordinary evening in their home in Torrent, just outside Valencia.

The boys, aged 3 and 5, were waiting for dinner when catastrophe struck with unimaginable force.

Their father was preparing a meal for his sons when a surge of floodwater tore through their neighborhood.

A parked trailer, swept away by the powerful currents, slammed into the house, causing the walls to collapse. As the water surged inside, the dad clung to his boys, desperately holding one in each arm.

But the force of nature was merciless.

He tried everything to save them

Relatives describe how the father tried to shield Rubén and Izan from the terror, moving them into the living room in an effort to calm them. But the floodwaters showed no mercy.

When the walls gave way, the dad fought with everything he had to keep his boys safe, but the overwhelming current ripped them from his grasp. All three were swept away into the torrent of water and debris.

The father survived, clinging to a tree branch for hours until rescuers found him. He was severely injured, requiring emergency surgery for significant leg injuries.

The boys’ mother, who had been working in Valencia that evening, rushed home to find her family torn apart.

A heartbreaking find

For two long weeks, volunteers from across Spain joined the search for Rubén and Izan. Hope dwindled with each passing day, but the family clung to the possibility of a miracle.

Finally, the boys’ bodies were discovered six miles downstream from their home, at separate locations. The police had the heart-wrenching task of informing the family of their loss.

“We’re devastated,” the boys’ aunt, Barbara Sastre, told Spain’s state TVE.

”We weren’t expecting them to be found alive but it always hurts when you get confirmation they’ve died.” Another relative offered this: “Our little angels are now looking after us from heaven.”

Their dog, a beloved family member, was also found lifeless.

A guilt he can’t escape

The father, still recovering in the hospital, has been unable to speak since the tragedy. His mother, Antonia, shared with reporters that he feels an unbearable guilt for being unable to save his children.

She also said: ”He was about to let go and let the current take him too, but the thought of his wife and not leaving her alone gave him the strength to hold on.”

This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the power of nature and the fragility of life. As Spain continues to recover, the story of Rubén and Izan will not be forgotten — a heartbreaking testament to a father’s desperate fight against an unstoppable force.

Let’s hold our loved ones close and keep this grieving family in our thoughts.
