The customer said employees were laughing at and staring at them while they were eating, and they repeatedly told a staff member that they felt uncomfortable.
But while some viewers believed refusing to pay was a reasonable response to alleged mistreatment, others saw the incident very differently and even accused them of simply looking for a free meal.
“I feel very uncomfortable…” the customer repeatedly said during the tense exchange
The video, filmed at Nobi Sushi, begins in the middle of a tense conversation between the customer and a female employee.
“I feel really uncomfortable… I’ve never done this in my life. I feel very uncomfortable,” the diner said.
The employee appeared apologetic and remained calm as the customer explained why they were upset.
The situation escalated when the diner announced that they weren’t going to pay for their food and prepared to leave.
“Do you want to call the police or no? Cuz I’m not paying for food…” they said.
The employee responded that they weren’t going to call the police and allowed them to leave.
But the customer continued explaining that their discomfort wasn’t directed at the employee herself.
“I feel very uncomfortable… Not by you. You did nothing. You’re great,” they said before turning her attention toward other staff members behind the counter.
“The people behind the counter are very rude,” the diner claimed. “You should teach your staff not to laugh at people and stare at them while they are sitting at a table.”
They then walked out while continuing to repeat that she felt uncomfortable, before turning the camera toward the restaurant’s name.
The footage later spread online, where viewers had very different interpretations of what had happened.
Some viewers accused her of turning the incident into an excuse for a free meal
One person wrote, “You ordered the food. Pay the ******* bill. No one cares how “uncomfortable” you feel.” While another added, “I wonder if it crossed her warped brain they might not have been laughing at her? They could’ve shared a joke between them but G.I Joanne here just KNEW it was about her.”
Several viewers also questioned why someone who claimed to be uncomfortable with the attention would continue filming the interaction.
They added, “So uncomfortable that s/he managed to film the whole thing for clicks.”
