Jay Leno was born on April 28, 1950, in New Rochelle, New York. His father, Angelo, was a salesman and his mother, Cathryn, a homemaker. Leno grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, after his family left the New York area when he was young. He had long-term plans to follow in his father’s footsteps and pursue a career in sales.

However, that would all change when he became a really funny guy at school. Leno loved performing pranks and practical jokes in school—his fifth-grade teacher even noted as much in one of his report cards.

Comedy career & school

Leno attended Emerson College in Boston. He graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech therapy. During his school days, he traveled between Boston and New York to attend auditions. Jay began getting gigs at venues around Boston while simultaneously working at a car dealership. However, after a few years, he decided to leave for the West Coast.

Jay Leno was hired as a writer for the television series Good Times. There, he worked alongside future television host David Letterman and also served as a warm-up act for artists such as Tom Jones.
