Millions of people use an iPhone every day, but many have never stopped to think about one small detail in the name. What does the “i” actually mean? Now, we know the answer.
iPhones have been around for more than 25 years, which might be hard to understand. It feels like yesterday everyone walked around with “normal” phones, without having a camera, internet, apps for knowing when to feed your child, or “liking” pictures while sitting on the bus.
But no matter what, that is the reality of today. The iPhone changed society in many ways, but what many might think about is what the “i” really stands for in “iPhone.”
Well, the answer goes back more than 25 years, to a major Apple announcement that helped shape the company’s future. When Steve Jobs introduced the first iMac in 1998, he explained that the “i” stood for “internet.”
That made sense at the time. The internet was rapidly becoming part of everyday life, and Apple wanted the iMac to be seen as a simple way for people to get online.
But the little letter meant more than one word. Jobs also suggested that the “i” could represent words including individual, instruct, inform, and inspire. It could even refer to the personal pronoun “I.”
In other words, the letter was deliberately broad enough to have several meanings. According to tech experts, no single strict definition applied to every Apple product.
The meaning behind the ‘I’ in iPhone
“Steve Jobs said the ‘I’ stands for ‘internet, individual, instruct, inform [and] inspire,'” Paul Bischoff, a privacy advocate at Comparitech, told Reader’s Digest.
However, while those words were crucial to the presentation, Jobs also said that the ‘I’ “didn’t have an official meaning,” Bischoff explained.
“He also alluded to it referencing ‘I’ as a personal pronoun, and ‘instruction’ for education purposes.”
Over the years, Apple continued using the “i” in products such as the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, turning the single letter into one of the most recognizable parts of the company’s branding.
Today, the meaning can seem even more fitting. Apple has introduced Apple Intelligence, its collection of AI-powered features, giving the familiar “i” another possible connection to the word intelligence.
While “internet” was Steve Jobs’s original explanation, the story behind the letter is a little more complicated. So the next time you pick up your iPhone, you’ll know there’s more behind that tiny “i” than you might have thought.
