Some argue we need to get rid of the 40-hour work week, while others suggest we dedicate even more hours of our lives to our jobs.
If you’re a recent college graduate or someone who is just joining the work force, working Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 can be a shock. Just ask Brielle Asero, who goes by @brielleybelly123 on TikTok.
Asero shared a clip of herself venting about the reality of working a 9 to 5 job fresh out of college, and shockingly many felt her pain.
“I’m commuting in this city and it takes me f**king forever to get there. There’s no way I’m gonna be able to do this,” she said as tears welled in her eyes.
She went on to explain how if she lived within walking distance it would be better because she’d be home much earlier and have time for other things.
But since she can’t afford to live in the city where she works, she’s forced to commute long distances.
The national average commute time is 26.4 minutes. The average commute time in New Jersey, where 10 percent of the population commutes into New York City, is 30.3 minutes.
“I get on the train at like 7:30 and I don’t get home till like 6:15 earliest.”
“I don’t get time to do anything. I want to shower, eat my dinner and go to sleep. I don’t have time or energy to cook my dinner either,” she said.
Asero said many of her basic routines have “gone out the window” due to the “crazy” 9 to 5 schedule.
Although some may argue the necessity of dating, Asero said her job cuts into her social life making it nearly impossible to date.
“I get off when it’s pitch black. How do you have energy, how do you have time to make friends?”
“I don’t have time for anything, I’m so stressed out,” she said.
Potentially setting herself up for a barrage of comments, Asero asked her audience if she was being dramatic.
Shockingly the majority of the comments were in agreement with her.
“The 40-hour work week is beyond outdated, your feelings are totally valid,” on TikTok user said.
“You’re not alone. It’s insane how your entire day is legit gone. This is why we need 4-day work weeks,” someone else added.
“Also beyond the social part, how are we supposed to run errands and get things done outside of work?”
