Meghan Mayer was shopping at Target with her older daughter when she saw a smock-style dress with balloon sleeves meant for young girls. She thought they would be perfect for Easter until she looked at them more closely and realized they had cutouts situated at the waist.
“I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, what in the world is going on here?’” Mayer told Today.com.
The mother of two and seventh grade teacher describes herself as “conservative” when it comes to dressing her daughters, ages 7 and 10, so she wasn’t sure if she was overreacting when she spotted the dresses in Target.
She asked her audience on TikTok what they thought of the dress, and users were divided.
Many people agreed with Mayer writing, “I completely agree. My daughter is 4 and is in a 6/7. Absolutely inappropriate.”
“That dress is SO CUTE until you see the slit. Why did they have to ruin it like that?!?”
One person blamed retailers for “trying to mature our kids too fast.”
However, there were plenty of people who did not find an issue with the cutouts.
“When I was a kid in the 70’ s I wore halter tops and tube tops they were not seen as big deals. I don’t think this is scandalous.”
“Overreaction for sure. It’s super cute! Now if it was super short or low cut I would 100% get where you’re coming from.”
“I bought this for my six-year-old. I think it’s super cute.”
What do you think? Is the dress appropriate for young girls?
