Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder may be more than just costars and friends.
According to Ryder, the pair may have technically tied the knot while shooting a scene for the 1992 film Dracula. She revealed the stunning news in 2018 while they promoted their fourth film together, Destination Wedding.
“We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life,” she told EW at the time.
Ryder has long claimed the scene they filmed was legally binding because director Francis Ford Coppola used a real Romanian priest.
“We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.”
Even Coppola backed up her claim.
Once the filming was complete Coppola wasn’t pleased with the scene. He thought “having the real wedding ceremony as it might be in that religion [Greek Orthodox Christianity] would be beautiful.” So they filmed a ceremony in a Greek Orthodox church in Los Angeles.
“In a sense when we were all done, we realised that Keanu and Winona really are married as a result of this scene and this ceremony,” the director told The Guardian that same year.

Married?! In real life?!
In a 2021 interview with Esquire, Reeves, who has a girlfriend, spoke on the subject.
“We did a whole take of a marriage ceremony with real priests. Winona says we are. Coppola says we are. So I guess we’re married under the eyes of God,” he said.
He also addressed the situation while on The Talk in 2019, sharing that once every so often he’ll receive a text from his longtime friend saying “Hello, husband.”
While Reeves doesn’t have as good of a memory of the event as Ryder – the scene was reportedly filmed on Valentine’s Day – he’s gone along with Ryder and Coppola’s belief that the two actors did in fact get married on the set of Dracula.
“Oh my gosh, we’re married.”
Legally married or not, the two have a beautiful friendship that’s lasted throughout the years.
“I’ve been so lucky in my life that I’ve worked with so many great actors but there is something very, very special with Keanu,” Ryder said in a 2018 interview. “I have so much love and respect for him and it really genuinely makes going to work and working an absolute pleasure.”
