New details have emerged surrounding the tragic death of 20-year-old University of Alabama student James “Jimmy” Gracey, whose body was recovered in Barcelona following a days-long search.
Gracey, who had been visiting Spain for spring break with friends, was last seen alive around 3 a.m. on Tuesday after leaving the Shôko beachfront nightclub — just steps away from the Mediterranean shoreline.
On Thursday evening, dive teams recovered his body near Port Olímpic, confirming the worst fears of his family, friends, and fraternity brothers who had been desperately searching for him.
Witness describes final moments
A local witness has now come forward with chilling new details about Gracey’s final moments.
According to a statement given to Mossos d’Esquadra and reported by The Daily Mail, Gracey was seen walking toward the rocky outcrop of Somorrostro Beach, located just outside the nightclub.
“From there, he may have fallen into the sea and drowned,” the witness said.
Authorities also revealed that Gracey’s wallet was discovered floating in the water shortly before his body was recovered. While drowning is currently the leading theory, officials say an autopsy has yet to be completed.
Investigation ongoing
Police are continuing to piece together Gracey’s final hours.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows him leaving the nightclub with an unidentified person. Investigators are working to determine who that individual is and whether they played any role in the incident.

Authorities have since searched the Airbnb where Gracey was staying on Ronda de Sant Pere and interviewed the friends he was traveling with.

His mother, Therese, made a desperate public plea for help on Facebook:

She added that her son was last believed to be wearing a white T-shirt and dark trousers.
Family confirms tragic loss
Following the recovery, Gracey’s family released a heartbreaking statement:
“Our family is heartbroken as we confirm that Jimmy’s body has been recovered in Barcelona,” the Gracey family said.
“Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss.”
