Selena Gomez’s latest push for her brand, Rare Beauty, ended up going viral; however, it was probably not in the way she hoped.
On Wednesday, April 1, she showed up at a Rare Beauty x Sephora event, where she was styled by makeup artist Hung Vanngo, the same person behind her Oscars 2025 look.
She was joined by a group of influencers, including New York esthetician Natalie Violette. The two posed for a photo together that quickly blew up online, with people zeroing in on the singer’s expression.
The photo showed both women from the waist up, in matching black outfits and with impeccable makeup.
But instead of focusing on the glam, most people fixated on what they called Gomez’s “unnatural glance” and “fake smile.”
“why are her eyes crazy like that,” one person wrote in a quoted tweet.
Another person was confused and asked in a comment, “Is it AI or photoshop?” “From plastic surgery,” another commenter seemingly reasoned.
“It’s called a forced smile” another Facebook user intoned. Another humorously added, “Looks like a robot! Maybe the ponytail is really tight!”
The next day, April 2, Gomez showed up at another event at The West Hollywood Edition hotel in LA, this time wearing a pink mini dress to promote the new True To Myself Natural Matte Rare Beauty foundation.
While there had been those criticizing her, others thought the intense speculation was unnecessary, with one person commenting, “Shes giving wide eyes bc the girl is pretty next to her. Thats it.”
“She looks amazing,” another added.
This is not the first time Selena Gomez’s appearance has come under scrutiny. She has been open for years about how her changing appearance is tied to ongoing health issues, particularly her lupus diagnosis and related treatments.
She’s explained that weight fluctuations and facial changes are often side effects of medication, not cosmetic choices. Addressing speculation directly, she said, “I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues”, adding that the attention on her looks can be frustrating.
She’s also pointed out that medications like steroids can impact her body, saying, “My weight constantly fluctuates because I have certain medications that I have to take for the rest of my life”.
