The fiancé of one of the five Italians who tragically died in the Maldives scuba diving accident last week has shared the final message from his girlfriend.
Federico Colombo, 26, the fiancé of Giorgia Sommacal, the 22-year-old who died in a tragic scuba diving incident on May 14, has shared her last message to him with Italian media.
Sommacal was exploring Vaavu Atoll in the Indian Ocean together with her mother, marine biologist and experienced diver Monica Montefalcone, 51, who also died in the tragedy alongside three other Italian tourists. According to local reports, the group became trapped inside a cave roughly 200 feet underwater with sharks.
The heartbroken fiancé is still trying to process the tragedy and referred to Sommacal as his future wife and the mother of the children they never got to have.
Sommacal’s last message was excited
“She was thrilled, as always. She told me that as soon as she surfaced, the first thing she’d do was send me photos of the Maldivian depths,” Colombo said.
“I waited for those shots. But they never arrived.”
Then his girlfriend’s father, Carlo Sommacal, delivered the devastating news.
“My world fell apart.”
Colombo also described Montefalcone, his girlfriend’s mother, as being like a second mother to him. They were all planning a trip to Egypt once Sommacal had finished her university degree.
He also highlighted how special the relationship between the mother and daughter was, referring to it as ‘unique’.
Sommacal was supposed to return to Italy on Colombo’s birthday, May 24.
“I couldn’t wait for her to arrive. I’ll wait until then because I still can’t understand what happened.”
