An Australian magician has been found dead after vanishing during a solo camping trip, bringing an 11-day search to a heartbreaking end.
Before Daniel Hidden disappeared, visitors to his website were greeted with the message “transformation requires disappearance,” a phrase that took on a chilling meaning after the 26-year-old vanished during camping trip in the remote Australian bushland.
Nobody could have known how eerily prophetic those words would seem in the days that followed.
‘One of his favorites’
According to officials, the young Aussie magician drove away from home in the early hours of June 14, setting off a massive search involving soldiers, drones and more than 100 emergency personnel.
Friends said Daniel had left in his silver Hyundai towing a caravan and was headed toward the Springbrook area for a camping trip. It was a place he knew well and one that held special significance.
“He’s taken me to this place as well. This is one of his favorites,” Daniel’s brother, Ilya Jamshidi, told 7News Australia.
“He’s got the coordinates of a spot in this place tattooed on his fingers. So, it means a lot to him.”
‘Unusual’ behavior
Two days later, police found Daniel’s vehicle, phone and personal belongings near Gorge Falls and Cougal Cascades, popular hiking spots surrounded by dense and rugged bushland.
But there was no sign of the experienced adventurer.
At first, his family assumed he had simply set off on another one of his solo escapes. Camping trips and weekends away were common for Daniel, but disappearing without any contact was “unusual,” according to his brother.
“He does do getaways, camping frequently, but never no contact,” Jamshidi told the outlet.
“He hasn’t taken his phone with him, which is a bit unusual.”
‘Unexplored places’
As the days dragged on, concern quickly turned into fear.
“A week without contact or shelter, that’s pretty unusual to us,” he said.
For a family that knew how comfortable Daniel was in the wilderness, his disappearance made even less sense.
According to his brother, the experienced outdoorsman actively chased challenges and preferred venturing beyond established tracks.
“He doesn’t like sticking to marked tracks. He desires the hardship in unexplored places,” Jamshidi explained. “If it seems dangerous or exciting, that’s most likely where he would be.”
Massive search
As the search stretched into a second week, the operation expanded across the rugged terrain, bringing together police, SES volunteers, Queensland Fire Department crews, Rural Fire Service volunteers, Polair and drone operators. Australian Defence Force personnel later joined the effort as searchers continued combing the remote landscape, Newsweek reports.
“Because of the terrain and the large area that needs to be traversed, we have been utilizing aerial assets including [police aviation units] and drones,” Acting Chief Superintendent Brett Jackson said, explaining that the abundance of water in the rugged landscape meant there was a “high likelihood” of survival.
And Daniel’s mother, Faranak, held onto that hope of survival.
“But he’s alive and people can come and help to find him before something happens,” Faranak said in an emotional plea, per 7News. “He is my son and he is very strong. You don’t know how he is capable of doing anything.”
“I believe in him…We need to find him, he needs help,” the concerned mother begged.
Daniel’s body discovered
Sadly, that hope came to an end on June 24.
After 11 days of searching, Daniel’s body was discovered in Mount Cougal National Park around 11 a.m., bringing the desperate effort to a heartbreaking close.
According to 7News Australia, police said his death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding Daniel’s death are continuing.
