39-year-old actor Armie Hammer stars in the low-budget thriller directed by Uwe Boll, marking his first leading role since stepping away from major Hollywood productions following multiple allegations that derailed his career. While the film has divided audiences, a report now claims Hammer himself was shocked by the finished product, allegedly describing it as “disgusting” after watching the final cut.

Armie Hammer’s Hollywood career largely came to a halt in 2021 after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, including allegations of abuse, coercive behavior, and violent sexual fantasies, all of which he has denied.

Leaked messages that appeared to show disturbing conversations went viral, further fueling public scrutiny. Although the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced in 2023 that it would not file criminal charges, citing insufficient evidence to prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt, the controversy led Hammer to lose several high-profile acting roles, representation, and studio projects, effectively sidelining him from mainstream Hollywood for several years.

In Citizen Vigilante, Hammer plays an American businessman who hunts criminal migrants across Europe, a premise that quickly sparked backlash following its release.

Critics largely panned the film, with several reviews condemning its anti-migrant messaging and accusing it of promoting harmful stereotypes. Despite the negative critical response, the movie has attracted a far more favorable audience reaction, creating a sharp divide between reviewers and viewers.

According to Puck News, sources close to Hammer claimed the actor had not read the complete script before accepting the role because he had struggled to find work after several years away from the industry.

Citizen Vigilante initially faced distribution hurdles in Germany, where regulators reportedly raised concerns about its content before later approving it with an adults-only rating.

The film gained additional attention after it was promoted by Elon Musk and briefly made available for free on X, helping it climb digital sales charts on platforms including Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video.

Director Uwe Boll has defended both the film and his decision to cast Hammer, arguing that the movie tackles uncomfortable issues that other productions avoid. He also praised Hammer’s acting ability, saying the actor deserved an opportunity to rebuild his career despite the controversies surrounding him.
