The Grammy-nominated Welsh singer recently celebrated “Total Eclipse of the Heart” surpassing one billion streams on Spotify, earning a commemorative plaque from the platform. However, Tyler admitted the financial reward was far less impressive than many fans might expect.
Speaking to the media earlier this year, the singer said the milestone had barely affected her earnings, joking that the payout amounted to “just about nothing.”
Despite the modest streaming income, Tyler said she has never grown tired of performing the 1983 power ballad.
She described Total Eclipse of the Heart as an “evergreen” song that continues to find new audiences through films, commercials, and social media.

“I love it because everyone can’t wait to sing it,” she said.
Tyler also revealed she never expected the track to become such a phenomenon because the original recording ran for nearly eight minutes. It was only after a shorter radio edit was released that the song became an international hit, spending four weeks atop the U.S. charts.
Its popularity received another boost in 2025 after David Guetta sampled the song in his single Together, introducing it to a new generation of listeners.
While streaming royalties may not have met expectations, Tyler said reaching one billion plays remains an incredible achievement.
“I’m really happy,” she said. “When you think about it, there’s only 8.3 billion people in the world.”
The milestone added to a career that spanned more than five decades. Beyond Total Eclipse of the Heart, Tyler earned international acclaim with hits including It’s a Heartache and Holding Out for a Hero, represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, and received an MBE in recognition of her contributions to music.
Tyler said in the same interview from January of this year that she’s still excited to perform and is looking forward to touring across Europe throughout 2026.
Now, an official statement released on Thursday morning confirms she has died at the age of 75, according to the BBC. A statement posted on the singer’s official website reads: “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.
“We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”
This is such a heartbreaking tragedy. We are sending our best to the singer’s family, friends, and fans as they deal with this loss.
