After an 11-year-old boy who was “football mad” was killed just days before England’s World Cup match against Argentina, a heartfelt “11 forever” tribute remembered the young fan during the game he never lived to watch.
George Dennis was just 11 years old when he died following a road traffic collision on July 10, only days before England’s World Cup quarter-final against Argentina on July 15.
According to the BBC, the Essex child was struck by a truck near a pedestrian crossing in the parish of Ongar. He was taken to hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Essex Police said the 48-year-old driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving before later being arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
‘Cheeky smile’
In the days that followed, George’s mother, Emma, shared a moving tribute through Essex Police, describing the devastating loss of her son.
“He had his whole life ahead of him,” Emma said of her son. “George was a bright light in our lives. He had the kindest heart, a cheeky smile, and a personality that was truly one of a kind. He was full of life, always making people laugh, and brought so much happiness to everyone who knew him.
“George was my world, My baby. The pain of losing him is impossible to put into words, and we simply do not know how we will ever begin to heal as a family,” the grieving mother said.
‘Football mad’
In the message, Emma, recalling the excitement he brought into their home every time the Tottenham Hotspur took the field, explained that “George was absolutely football mad.”
“Football was his passion, and it brought him so much joy and happiness. Always so passionate, shouting at the telly watching every game when his beloved Spurs scored. A noise I will miss for a lifetime,” she added of the young football player, who was fully invested in the 2026 World Cup.
George never got the chance to see England’s World Cup journey continue, but his story reached someone who wanted to make sure he was still part of the occasion.
‘George 11 always’
After learning about the child’s death, former Tottenham midfielder David Bentley – who retired in 2014 – decided to honor the young Spurs supporter in a deeply personal way.
Carrying a personalized England shirt with “George 11 always” on the back, Bentley traveled to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for England’s match against Argentina. Fans said he held it overhead for much of the game, which ended in a 2-1 defeat.
Before kick-off, Bentley explained the gesture in a post shared on Instagram.
“It felt only right to bring George with me to watch England play Argentina today,” the 41-year-old shared alongside several images and a clip of George going wild in the stands.
“George’s shirt will be with me in the stadium, and I know he’ll be watching down on the boys today. RIP George Dennis. You won’t be forgotten.”
‘Little legend’
The tribute resonated with football supporters, many of whom filled the comments section with messages for George’s family and praise for Bentley’s gesture.
“RIP to a little legend…lovely post mate,” shared one fan in the comment section of Bentley’s Instagram post.
A second wrote, “A tribute he would have absolutely loved,” while another added: “Such an awful thing to happen to George. Hearing lots of stories how much George & the family loved Spurs. Well done on doing this for little George.”
Meanwhile, Bentley’s post also grabbed the attention of Spurs footballer Xavi Simons, who reached out to George’s family with a message on X, inviting them to future games.
“George’s family is welcome to join my family and I at any upcoming Spurs game. Sending all of my love,” wrote the 23-year-old midfielder, who is currently recovering from an ACL injury.
