Mitch McConnell has shared another update on his recovery after being hospitalized following a fall, revealing that he will miss one of Kentucky’s biggest political events as he continues rehabilitation.

84-year-old Senator Mitch McConnell announced that he will not attend this year’s Fancy Farm Picnic, an annual political gathering in western Kentucky, saying he is still focused on regaining his strength before returning to work.
“There’s no place I’d rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky, feasting on pork and mutton,” McConnell said in a statement released on July 27.
He added that he is “still working hard” to return to his full schedule in both Washington and Kentucky, explaining that he is undergoing intensive physical therapy under his doctors’ orders.
The statement was accompanied by a new photo showing McConnell smiling from a hospital bed alongside his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.
His office also released an update from the Office of the Attending Physician, confirming that McConnell remains in a rehabilitation facility following the fall he suffered at home in June.
According to the statement, he has been following a rigorous programme of physical therapy designed to rebuild his strength and reduce the risk of future falls. However, doctors have not yet medically cleared him to leave the facility or resume his duties in the Senate.
McConnell first addressed his condition publicly on July 13 after weeks of silence, explaining that the delay was partly due to his reluctance to discuss the challenges of aging.
“Folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older,” he wrote. “Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct.”
His absence had fuelled speculation online, with some questioning why he had not spoken sooner and others wondering about the seriousness of his condition. Chao also faced questions after reports noted she had remained on a previously planned trip to China following her husband’s fall. A spokesperson later said the senator’s condition did not require her to return immediately.
McConnell also used his earlier statement to dispel rumours about his health, stressing that he had undergone extensive medical testing.
“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion,” he wrote.
“I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumours or haemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital.”
He also revealed that he developed a mild case of pneumonia during his recovery.
Although McConnell said he is disappointed to miss the Fancy Farm Picnic, he thanked supporters for their well wishes and said he is looking forward to returning to the Senate and to Kentucky once doctors determine it is safe for him to do so.
