A birthday dinner at an upscale New Jersey restaurant ended in heartbreak after a woman received a dessert with an offensive message, an incident the business later described as a mistake.
Antonia Sinibaldi, a singer and songwriter from New Jersey, had gathered with family and friends at Blu on the Hudson in Weehawken on June 20 to celebrate her 29th birthday, a milestone that carried special meaning.
Her birthday was about more than another year – it was a chance to celebrate how far she had come.
After a crash involving a drunk driver left her with a cervical spinal injury at just 2 years old, she has spent most of her life using a motorized wheelchair and ventilator. Even so, she has built a life around her passion for music, making the evening one she hoped to enjoy with the people closest to her.
‘Happy wheelchair birthday’
According to multiple reports, following dinner, the group ordered dessert with a birthday candle to celebrate the occasion.
But, instead of receiving a traditional birthday message, the dessert arrived with words that left everyone at the table stunned.
Written in sauce on the plate was the message: “Happy wheelchair birthday.”
Speaking to NBC New York, Sinibaldi described her immediate reaction.
“Body started shaking, body started spasming. My body reacted faster than my mouth or my mind,” she said. “It offended me. This whole thing doesn’t sound real.”
In another interview with CBS News, she added: “It took me by surprise. I shouldn’t be reminded of something that I already know.”
‘No malicious intent’
As the story spread online, Blu on the Hudson said the message was never intended as a joke or insult and explained how the mistake happened.
CBS News reports that the restaurant claimed the word “wheelchair” had been added to the internal ticket to help staff identify where the birthday dessert should be delivered. The note was mistakenly interpreted as part of the message that was meant to be written on the plate.
“There was absolutely no malicious or disrespectful intent behind that notation,” a restaurant spokesperson said.
‘Don’t bring my disability in every sentence’
The restaurant also issued a statement that was shared with People.
“We at Blu on the Hudson are aware of the recent video circulating on social media, and we are deeply saddened by what occurred. We sincerely apologize to the guest and to everyone who was hurt or offended by this incident which took place on June 20, 2026,” the spokesperson said, adding that “every guest” should be treated “with dignity, respect, and care.”
Although the restaurant insisted the message was an honest mistake, Sinibaldi said the experience still left a lasting impression.
“My family is angry, my friends are angrier, but me, I’m, I am just baffled. Don’t bring my disability in every sentence,” she said, adding that her group was offered complimentary drinks after, but declined. “That’s what people – they – should know.”
