Melanie Griffith shows off new look after dissolving fillers as cosmetic work went “too far”

For years, Melanie Griffith was one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces.

But behind the glamour, the 69-year-old actress has been remarkably open about something far more personal: the pressure she felt surrounding her appearance, and what happened when cosmetic work began to change the way she saw herself.

Melanie Griffith has always reminded me a little of Marilyn Monroe — not because they looked alike, but because they shared something in the way they carried themselves. There was a warmth, vulnerability and charm in her mannerisms that made her impossible to forget.

I’ve loved her in so many movies over the years, but Shining Through with Michael Douglas has always been a favorite. Watching her go undercover during the war, she brought something completely different to the role — and it’s a performance I’ve never forgotten.

Born in Manhattan to actress Tippi Hedren, Griffith grew up largely in Los Angeles and was surrounded by Hollywood from an early age. She graduated from the Hollywood Professional School at just 16, having already spent much of her childhood in the spotlight.

And as we all know, Tinseltown can be one of the most appearance-obsessed places in the world. The pressure to look a certain way can be relentless, and in Hollywood, what people see on the outside can sometimes seem to matter far more than what lies underneath.

Melanie Griffith is one of the many actresses who have found themselves caught in the relentless pressure to stay youthful in Hollywood.

In her 50s, Griffith began turning to fillers in an effort to soften the visible effects of aging. But over time, the changes to her appearance became impossible to ignore, and fans began reacting — some with concern, others far less kindly.

The comments could be brutal.

One person summed up their reaction in particularly harsh terms: “The physical transformation this woman went through is staggering. From one of the most beautiful women on the big screen to… I have no idea what the hell she turned into.”

But behind the headlines and harsh online reactions was something much more personal. Griffith eventually revealed that she herself had become unhappy with some of the cosmetic work she had undergone — and decided it was time to start reversing it.

“I hated that thing…”

In 2017, Griffith opened up about when she first turned to cosmetic injections, revealing that she had started using them around 2010 in an attempt to soften the signs of aging.

“I hated that thing that was happening [to me],” she told Porter.

But what began as an attempt to fight the effects of time eventually went further than she realized. Griffith admitted that she didn’t understand how much her appearance had changed until other people began pointing it out.

“I didn’t until people started saying: ‘Oh my God, what has she done?’” she revealed.

Looking back, the Working Girl star admitted that reactions to her appearance had left her deeply hurt. Griffith also struggled to understand how the results had become so extreme. At one point, she even wondered whether she had experienced an allergic reaction to whatever had been injected.

“Somebody put this ridiculous stuff in and I think I must have been allergic to it,” she said.

Between 2014 and 2015, following the intense reaction to her appearance, Griffith decided it was time to reverse some of the work. She sought help from another doctor, who began dissolving the fillers.

“He started dissolving all of this sh*t that this other woman doctor put in. I had it done to my lips too. So awful!” she shared.

Her decision to have the fillers dissolved came during a particularly difficult period in her personal life, around the time her marriage to Antonio Banderas was coming to an end. Griffith, 69, and Banderas, 66, were married for nearly two decades before their divorce in 2014. The couple share one daughter, 29-year-old Stella.

“Hopefully, I look more normal now”

After everything she had been through, Griffith summed up her hopes for the reversal in just a few words:

“Hopefully, I look more normal now.”

After having the fillers dissolved, Griffith made it clear that she wasn’t looking for another dramatic transformation. It was a turning point for the actress, who had spent decades in an industry where appearance can feel almost impossible to escape.

She simply wanted to feel more like herself again.

“Hopefully, I look more normal now,” she said.

Battle with skin cancer

Griffith has also been candid about another experience that changed the way she thinks about her appearance: her battle with skin cancer.

In 2018, she shared a bare-faced photo on Instagram showing a bandage across her nose after undergoing dermabrasion as part of treatment following the removal of basal cell skin cancer.

“Bandaged again after having dermabrasion, the final step to fix the now removed basil cell skin cancer,” Griffith wrote.

But she wasn’t simply sharing a glimpse of her own recovery.

She used the moment to send a warning to her followers about spending too much time in the sun, urging people to protect their skin, wear sunscreen and get regular checks.

“be CAREFUL,” she wrote, encouraging anyone without a dermatologist to find one or visit a clinic and get tested.

Focusing on her health

After years of being open about the pressures she felt surrounding her appearance, Melanie Griffith appears to be putting the focus somewhere very different these days: her health, her happiness and simply feeling good in her own skin.

The 69-year-old actress recently gave fans a glimpse into her new wellness-focused lifestyle, sharing a series of photos from a luxury health retreat in Austria — and she looked happier and more relaxed than ever.

Griffith posted photos from her stay at VIVAMAYR Maria Wörth, a wellness retreat set on the shores of Austria’s Lake Wörthersee, where she spent several weeks taking part in what she described as a personal “health reset.”

In one photo, Griffith relaxed in the sunshine while wearing a black one-piece swimsuit. In another, she posed on a boat in the same swimsuit paired with denim shorts, looking completely at ease.

She also shared a glimpse of her active routine, including a yoga session in a bright pink sports bra and matching leggings.

But it wasn’t simply a getaway.

Griffith said she took part in the retreat’s signature “Cure” program, a medically supervised wellness and detox regime focused on nutrition, movement and recovery.

For the actress, the experience seemed to be about hitting the reset button and taking some time for herself.

“My ‘health reset’ gave me the chance to truly recharge, replenish and relax,” Griffith wrote.

She also shared her gratitude for the people who helped her along the way.

“I’m so grateful to all of the wonderful doctors, therapists and health practitioners who make the experience so special. -A little heaven on earth. ♥️”

And her fans certainly noticed the change.

The comments on her post were filled with people praising Griffith for looking happy, relaxed and radiant.

“You look relaxed and even more beautiful! ❤️,” one person wrote.

Another fan commented, “Lookin’ radiant & serene Sister. ❤️”

Someone else simply wrote, “looking like an angel! ❤️.”

After everything Griffith has said about growing older in Hollywood and her complicated relationship with cosmetic work, there’s something especially striking about seeing her now focusing on wellness rather than trying to turn back the clock.

At 69, she seems to be embracing a different kind of beauty — one built around feeling healthy, staying active and taking care of herself.

And judging by the smile in her latest photos, she may have found a pretty good place to start.
