John Goodman says body is ‘messed up’ after weight loss

After shedding more than 200 pounds, John Goodman has revealed a surprising downside to his dramatic transformation, admitting his body is now “messed up” from the weight loss.

John Goodman, who once weighed nearly 400 pounds, has spent years changing his relationship with food, alcohol and exercise.

“I just stopped eating all the time,” Goodman said in an earlier interview with ABC News. “I’d have a handful of food, and it’d go to my mouth. I was just eating all the time. I was just eating alcoholically.”

By 2023, People reports that he had lost more than 200 pounds, leaving fans stunned by his dramatically slimmer appearance.

But even after years of maintaining his weight loss, the 74-year-old star of Roseanne admits his reflection sometimes catches him off guard.

“I’m still trying to get used to my face,” he said during the Nov. 2 episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. “It’s weird. I think of myself as one way, and then I look at myself, ‘Oh, wow.'”

‘Still trying to get used to my face’

While Goodman generally ignores public discussions about his appearance, he acknowledges that being in the entertainment industry invites scrutiny, although he believes there should be limits.

“I just ignored it, you know, since I’m in this business, it is fair game – up to a point,” he said. “But yeah, I’m still trying to get used to my face. It’s weird. I think of myself as one way and then I look at myself.”

And his transformation has affected more than the way he sees himself.

‘My body is too messed up’

While discussing his four seasons on HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones, Goodman recalled worrying that one scene would require him to appear naked.

Uncomfortable with the changes to his body, he refused.

“I thought I was going to have to be naked. I said, ‘No. I’m good. My body is too messed up from losing all this weight,'” he told Horowitz, adding, “we got it done.”

Looking further back, Goodman – who voiced Sully in Monsters Inc. – also wondered whether his weight had affected the opportunities available to him in Hollywood, acknowledging that some of his difficulties may have involved “self-sabotage.”

“I was working enough as I was. But I wonder if I sabotaged myself,” he said on the podcast.

‘Still feel like a fat guy’

Despite his concerns about how his weight may have affected his career, Goodman has also discovered some unexpected pleasures in his slimmer physique.

In an Oct. 31 interview cited by Daily Express, the star of The Big Lebowski said, “I still feel like a fat guy, but it’s nice to be able to go into regular clothing stores and buy things.”

And although his physical transformation has been dramatic, Goodman’s latest interviews reveal that adjusting to the person he sees in the mirror remains an ongoing process.
