Arnold Schwarzenegger opens up about divorce from Maria Shriver: “It was my failure”

Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the biggest movie stars of all time, iconic for his roles in action flicks like The Terminator.

In a new interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Schwarzenegger opened up about a variety of topics, from aging to his upcoming film projects and even his much-publicized divorce from ex Maria Shriver, which he admitted was his “failure.”

“It was my failure”

Schwarzenegger and Shriver were married for 25 years, but their relationship ended in scandal in 2011 after it was revealed that the actor fathered a son 14 years earlier with the family’s longtime housekeeper.

Ten years after separating, the couple’s divorce was finalized in 2021. Schwarzenegger, whose character in the new Netflix series FUBAR is divorced in part because he cheated on his wife, was asked by the Hollywood Reporter if the series was “autobiographical.”

“It feels like it’s a documentary,” Schwarzenegger replied. But the actor said that while his character can justify his actions as part of his CIA job, Arnie has no excuses and takes the blame for his failed marriage.

“It was my f**kup. It was my failure,” he said.

“[The divorce] was very, very difficult in the beginning,” he added. “Eventually, you move on.”

While he takes the blame, he also said that he and Shriver handled everything ideally: “If there’s Oscars for how to handle divorce, Maria and I should get it for having the least amount of impact on the kids,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

Schwarzenegger says he and Shriver “are very proud of the way we raised our kids” and the family still celebrates holidays together. Schwarzenegger is currently in a relationship with physical therapist Heather Milligan.

“I plan to live forever”

The 75-year-old star also opened up about aging, saying that he’s never had cosmetic surgery, and is against anti-aging “gimmicks.”

Instead, Schwarzenegger says he just practices “old-fashioned” health and wellness: while he admits he smokes cigars, he also eats well, exercises and rides his bike every day.

Despite his age, he says he still loves his work-life balance and has no plans to retire any time soon.

“I love everything that I do. There’s no retiring,” he told the Hollywood Reporter. “I’m still on this side of the grass, so I’m happy. My plan is to live forever — and so far, so good!”

Future of Terminator, Conan, Twins

In the interview, Schwarzenegger also spoke about some potential returns to some of his most famous movie roles. He says he wanted to make a sequel to Twins with Danny DeVito called Triplets, but says the project was stopped after the death of original director Ivan Reitman: Reitman’s son Jason Reitman “f**ked it up,” according to Schwarzenegger.

He also told the Reporter that a new Conan film was in the works, but has been stalled for a decade due to rights disputes.

And as for his most famous movie franchise, The Terminator, Schwarzenegger says he’s finally done. While he says The Terminator was “largely responsible for [his] success,” he’s moving on after the fifth and sixth films disappointed.

“The franchise is not done. I’m done,” Schwarzengger said. “I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to The Terminator. Someone has to come up with a great idea.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger has made mistakes in his personal life, but we’re glad to see he’s still getting along great with his family and doing so well in life.
