“Big Bang Theory” star Kate Micucci reveals shock lung cancer diagnosis: “Never smoked a cigarette”

Actress and comedian Kate Micucci shocked fans this week after revealing she was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, even though she has “never smoked a day in her life.”

Despite the scary diagnosis, the Big Bang Theory star also shared some good news and projected optimism about her health.

Micucci, 43, is best known as one half of the musical comedy duo Garfunkel and Oates, as well as her recurring roles on Scrubs, Raising Hope and The Big Bang Theory as Raj’s love interest Lucy.

In a recent TikTok video (or “sicktok,” as Micucci calls it), the actress revealed that she was recently underwent surgery after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

“They caught it really early,” Micucci says. “It’s pretty weird because I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life… it was a surprise, but I guess it happens.”

While cigarette smoking is the leading risk factor for lung cancer, the CDC says that 10-20 percent of cases each year in the US occur in people who never smoked or smoked fewer than 100 cigarettes in their lifetime. Other risk factors include secondhand smoke, air pollution, and a family history of lung cancer.

According to Global Cancer Statistics, most lung cancer patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, but early detection can greatly improve your prognosis.

Micucci tells her fans that while it’s been “a little bit of a trip,” the surgery successfully removed the cancer and she’s “all good.”

She’s now recovering at the hospital, and says she’ll be “moving slow” for a few weeks, but plans to get back to making art soon. Video shows her taking her slowly walking around the hospital, admiring the artwork.

The video has been viewed over 1.8 million times, and many fans wished Micucci a speedy recovery and gratitude that her cancer was caught so early.
