Dana Carvey confirms viral internet rumor about being trapped in Turtle Man costume during ‘moment of silence’ for 9/11

For years the internet wondered if the rumors were true… Did Dana Carvey really observe a moment of silence after September 11, 2001 while dressed as the Turtle Man from the 2002 film The Master of Disguise?

Carvey has finally spilled the beans, and well sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

The comedian did in fact participate in a solemn moment of prayer while wearing his character’s ridiculous costume.

“So, as I remember it, everyone else was [wearing] civilian clothes, I’m dressed as the Turtle Man, with a bald head, and I’m holding hands and I’m lowering my head and praying and I just thought at the moment: ‘This is very strange.'”

The longtime comedian and impressionist confirmed the rumor during a recent episode of the Fly on the Wall podcast.

Co-host David Spade brought up the internet rumor and questioned Carvey if he had been actively shooting during the terrorist attack.

He explained that he had been shooting The Master of Disguise, but the part about him filming the morning of the terrorist attack was not true. The cast and crew “took an appropriate time off” and then resumed shooting.”

“What happened was they obfuscated it,” Carvey explained. “I was in [the costume] all that day and then they said, ‘We’re going to have a group prayer about 9/11.’ And I couldn’t get the thing — I would’ve held everyone for a half hour getting all that prosthetic makeup off.”

Spade agreed it was “ridiculous,” and then asked the question everyone wanted to know, did he manage to get the giant shell off?

“They might’ve gotten the shell off, but they didn’t get the turtle head or the turtle lip off,” the comedian said. “They couldn’t get it all off.”

The internet can now rest easy knowing that one viral rumor has been confirmed to be true.
