Dick Van Dyke, 97, performs as gigantic gnome on ‘The Masked Singer’: ‘It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever done’

Once again Dick Van Dyke, 97, has proven age is just a number.

The Hollywood legend made an appearance on the season premiere of The Masked Singer, and it was one to remember!

“Greatest reveal ever”

Dressed as a gigantic gnome, Van Dyke took the stage where he performed “When You’re Smiling,” by Frank Sinatra. Although if you asked him prior to his big debut on The Masked Singer, Van Dyke wasn’t even aware Sinatra sang it.

He was under the impression he was performing a song by Billie Holiday.

“I didn’t realize that Frank Sinatra had even done it. We did more of a kind of a Dixieland arrangement of it,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

When it came time for the big reveal Van Dyke had them stumped.

“I don’t think they expected anybody from my generation to be on that show. So I knew I was gonna fool them,” he said.

The 97-year-old actor said once his mask was removed everyone was shocked.

“I stepped out and everybody’s mouths dropped open. I think some people thought I was dead.”

His reveal caused a wave of emotions.

“This is the most seasoned and most decorated we’ve had on our show, ladies and gentlemen,” host Nick Cannon said.

“I love you so much, we love you, the whole world loves you so much. It’s an honor to have you on our show,” panelist Nicole Scherzinger said between tears. “I can’t believe you’re here, I’m trying to play it cool. You look so gorgeous, you look so handsome.”

Her fellow panelists Jenny McCarthy and Ken Jeong also gushed over the actor.

And as if dressing up as a gnome wasn’t enough of a surprise, Van Dyke shocked the audience with a performance of the fan-favorite “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Mary Poppins.

“I would say it’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever done.”

“I was so positive that nobody would ever guess it was me, that they would have somebody 97 years old on there.”

He’s right. I never would have guessed it was him inside the gnome costume!

Seeing him onstage again made me so happy.
