Fans furious over Ricky Gervais “tone deaf” post after ‘Office’ co-star Lucy Davis’ terminal cancer announcement

The Office star Lucy Davis has announced she has been diagnosed with terminal Stage 4 Breast Cancer. Several people have since shown their support for the actress, but one former co-worker is now in hot water. Social media has erupted over The Office creator Ricky Gervais after he shared a “tone deaf” post.

British actress Lucy Davis shared the heartbreaking news on Wednesday that she has been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. She admitted she was first diagnosed 18 months ago, but now it is too late for chemo.

““Hi friends. I wanted to share something with you all that I’ve kept to myself for a while but for various reasons would like to share now,” Lucy wrote.

“A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer, which has metastasized to my bones. Specifically to my spine, right hip, and my ribs. The cancer is incurable, and too late for chemo. The initial lump that I felt, wasn’t a ‘lump’ as such; rather a kind of hard spot. Really tiny.”

Lucy Davis continued, “I almost didn’t bother getting it checked. So I guess I’m saying don’t ignore anything – get everything checked out,” adding that she “doesn’t know how long” she has left.

Friends and co-workers were quick to show their support to Lucy. The Office creator Ricky Gervais posted in the comment section, writing three hearts.

However, what he later posted on his own social media accounts left many fans furious as Gervais appeared to promote his YouTube channel on X instead of showing support for Lucy.

Just four hours after Lucy shared her original post, Ricky encouraged his followers to subscribe to his channel.

“I do live broadcasts every Sunday on my YouTube channel. They’re mostly s***. Please subscribe anyway,” Ricky Gervais wrote.

On top of that, he spent the evening promoting his own new Netflix show, Alley Cats. Ricky shared posts telling fans where they could watch the series, while also retweeting positive reviews from viewers onto his own X account.

It didn’t take long before fans showed their anger towards him.

“Bit tone deaf. Former co-worker on one of the most successful pieces of work you’ve been involved in, revealed she is terminally ill, and you’re posting this stuff all evening,” one wrote, per The Sun.

“Out of touch and a narcissist”

“Holy s*** Rick. I knew you were out of touch and a narcissist but you post this s*** after the news about Lucy?” a second asked.

A third commented, “Yeah no don’t focus on Lucy Davis, by all means keep celebrating yourself and your painfully average solo work.”

The news of Lucy’s illness comes as Ricky’s wife, Jane Fallon, has also spoken openly about her own battle with breast cancer. Jane revealed earlier this year that she had been diagnosed with the disease, despite having no symptoms.
