52-year-old Gwyneth Paltrow does not have any regrets for the controversial candle she launched with her company Goop.
The candle, which was priced at $75 a piece, went viral in 2020 because of what the label read. Thd candle was branded quite simply, with a white background that read the label, “This Smells Like my Vagina.”
Years after the item went viral, Gwyneth Paltrow has decided to open up about it. In an interview at the 2025 Mindvalley Manifesting Summit this past weekend, she had a response for everyone who criticized her.
She said, “You know that product is so fascinating because we were messing around with different scents one day, and I smelled something and I was like, ‘Oh, that smells like… You know.'”
She said it started off as a joke with Heretic perfumer, Douglas Little. But Little decided to take it further.
“I was joking,” she went on. “And then he [Douglas] was like, ‘Oh we should make that a candle and put it on the site.’ And I thought he was kidding and I was like, ‘yeah, definitely. That sounds like a winner right there.'”
However, then ‘all of a sudden, it was literally on the website,’ Paltrow recalled the moment as she laughed.
“And then we broke the internet, again. And then it took us a long time to live that one down,” she mused.
Despite the criticism it drew, the actress and wellness enthusiast decided to keep the candle on the website.
“I kept it on the site because there is an aspect to women’s sexuality that I think we’re socialized to feel a lot of shame and I sort of loved this kind of punk rock idea,” she reasoned.
“We are beautiful and we are awesome.” And as for anyone who disagrees and brings to her criticism, she had three words, “Go f*** yourself.”
The candle is not available anymore, but it contained notes of geranium, citrus bergamot, cedar, Damask rose, and ambrette seed in its scent.
After the candle’s success, Gwyneth Paltrow launched two follow up scents called, ‘This Smells Like my Orgasm’ and ‘This Smells Like My Prenup’.
In 2022, she launched, ‘Hands Off My Vagina,’ right after Roe v. Wade was overturned. The company said it would donate $25 per every candle to the ACLU Foundation’s Reproductive Freedom Project.
