In 2005, Jamie Foxx won his first and only Oscar for his performance as Ray Charles in the hit film Ray. And, after his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the comedian deserves at least a nod from the academy for his brilliant impressions of his celebrity friends.
Jamie Foxx has always been known for his uncanny ability to mimic voices, but his performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon proved just how versatile he really is.
In 2015, the Oscar-winning actor and Grammy-winning singer appeared on Wheel of Musical Impressions, a fan-favorite game where guests impersonate famous singers performing unexpected songs.
Mick Jagger and ‘Hakuna Matata’
The first spin of the wheel challenged Foxx to sing The Lion King’s classic song “Hakuna Matata” in the voice of Mick Jagger. The star of Collateral nailed the Rolling Stones frontman’s signature lip movements, swagger, and energy while belting out the Disney anthem.
The audience erupted in laughter, and even Fallon, who had seen countless celebrity impressions, looked genuinely impressed.
Bee Gees meets Barney
Fallon had to sing “I Love You, You Love Me,” – the beloved theme song of Barney the purple Dinosaur – and sell it as Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees. Fallon’s high-pitched falsetto was impressive, but the real showstopper was yet to come.
Legend
On his next spin, Foxx hit another kids’ favorite – the sprightly Toys “R” Us jingle, in the voice of John Legend, the baritone singer who’s earned 13 Grammy Awards.
As soon as the Horrible Bosses star opened his mouth, it was clear – he had Legend’s voice down perfectly. He crooned the nostalgic lyrics, “I don’t wanna grow up, I’m a Toys ‘R’ Us kid,” with such heartfelt soulfulness that it sounded like Legend was holding the microphone.
But Foxx wasn’t done. He kept the impression going, smoothly transitioning into Legend’s hit song “All of Me,” flawlessly hitting the high notes while maintaining Legend’s signature vocal style.
He then poked fun at Legend’s calm demeanor, mimicking his reserved personality by offering a small, shy wave after finishing his song.
“This show is off the rails tonight,” Fallon joked about his guest’s impressive impressions.
‘Dreamgirls’ reunion
To wrap up the game, Foxx took on yet another powerhouse vocalist – Jennifer Hudson, whom he starred alongside in the 2006 film Dreamgirls.
And the song was the children’s classic “On Top of Spaghetti,” to the tune of Hudson’s show-stopping Dreamgirls anthem, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”
Foxx emotionally sang about losing his “poor meatball” from a mountain of spaghetti “all covered with cheese.” And with dramatic emotion and powerhouse vocals, Foxx ended the song by stretching out a single high note for what felt like an eternity, causing Fallon to leap to his feet for a standing ovation.
Magnificent performer
Years later, fans can’t get enough of the star and his “massive talent.”
“The body language on Jamie’s Mick Jagger impression completely sells it for me. The strutting all around the room, the hands at the sides like an ostrich, and the occasional wave always kills me,” writes one online user of Foxx singing “Hakuna Matata” as the Rolling Stones frontman.
“No man in the world will ever, EVER be able to do Jennifer Hudson singing on top of spaghetti again after Jamie Foxx (sic),” shares a second, while a third applauds the comedian’s pitch: “Let’s appreciate his high notes during the Jennifer Hudson impression.”
Another adds, “Jamie is hands down one of the most magnificent performers on this earth!”
From Mick Jagger’s energy to John Legend’s soulful vocals and Jennifer Hudson’s powerhouse notes, Foxx didn’t just do impressions – he became the artists. And that’s why his performance is still a must-watch for music and comedy lovers alike.
