On Monday, Mariska Hargitay and husband Peter Hermann made a rare red carpet appearance with all three of their children.
The family attended the 2023 Stuttering Association for the Young Benefit Gala in New York City. The couple, who are parents to August, 16, Amaya, 12, and Andrew, 11, were inducted into SAY’s Hall of Fame for their involvement with the organization.
Hargitay spoke with People about how her family became involved with SAY.
“I met Taro [SAY’s founder Taro Alexander] through the sort of actor communities. We know a lot of people in common. I thought that he was a magical human being, and he told me about the organization, and then he invited us to a benefit,” she said.
The actress and mother of three explained how despite already having attended “a million fundraisers,” she was blown away by SAY’s work and “loving community.”
“I could feel the cells of my heart changing— the molecular construction of my heart— it was so beautiful.”
So when Hargitay needed help for her oldest son, she knew exactly where to turn.
“Our son stutters, and it was so beautiful to have this lovely community to introduce him to and learn about it from the experts.”
Hargitay and Hermann welcomed their son August in 2006, and the couple later adopted Amaya and Andrew within six months of each other in 2011.
It’s rare that the entire family makes an appearance together, though in December 2022, Hargitay shared a photo of the family of five enjoying a day at Disney World.
I can’t believe how grown up they look! I remember when August was just born and now he’s 16 and such a handsome young man.
